Achievement 2 @hayleydemi Task : Basic Security on Steem
Hello Steemians, this is my achievement 2 post about the basic security on Steemit. Security is paramount and we have to do what is necessary to secure our accounts.
The various Steemit keys and their uses are listed below:
Posting key
This key is utilized to login to Steemit. It is additionally used to perform activities like making a post or remark. It is utilized to upvote or downvote.
It is likewise used to edit a comment or post, mute individuals, resteem content and to follow individuals
Active key
This key is used to perform delicate tasks such as converting SBD, powering up and powering down, funds transfer, voting witnesses. It is also used to update profile details and photos as well as place an order in the market.
Owner key
It is used to recover an account that has been stolen or compromised. It is the most powerful of all the keys and should be used only when absolutely important as it can reset other keys, even the owner key itself. It is preferable to store this key offline.
Memo key
This key is used when you are transferring funds for encrypting and decrypting memos. You can use the pound /# sign before a memo to encrypt it
How to keep your account secure
You can ensure your account is secure by always keeping your master password very safe. Do not share it with any third party site. When logging in, use the appropriate key where necessary.
Why you should be careful with your master key
The master key can be used to change every other key/password. If someone unscrupulous gets access to it, you can lose your account and everything in it.
What can you do if you lose your keys/password ?
If you lose your keys, there's nothing you can do. This is why your master password has to be stored somewhere really safe. An offline storage is preferable in case of a database crash or hard drive misfortune
Difference between master password and owner key
The master password is basically used to make all the other keys including the owner key. The only time you would be needing your master password is when you want to recover your account.
Steemit Wallet
The Steemit wallet is identical to other crypto wallets, with some uniqueness. The wallet contains 3 things:
- Steem
- Steem Power
- Steem Dollars(SBD)
The Steem can be powered up to steem power. It can also be transferred to another account or traded on the market.
Steem power helps your account influence. It is a way of investing in Steemit and you can also liquidate it by powering down which takes a 4 week duration.
SBD can be exchanged in the market for steem and transferred to another account.
How to power up
- Click in wallet from your profile
- Click the drop down arrow in the steem balance and select the power up option.
- Put in the required details in the next page that comes up and confirm the power up.
How to transfer steem/SBD
- After logging in, click on "wallet"
- Click the drop-down arrow on the steem or sbd balance
- Select Transfer
- Input the desired amount and confirm.
