What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is claiming or using another person's work or ideas (which may be in the form of text or image) as your own without giving proper acknowledgement, citation and credit to the rightful owner (original author).

Types of Plagiarism

There are different ways Plagiarism can occur. They include:

1. Self Plagiarism
2. Direct Plagiarism
3. Paraphrased plagiarism
4. Accidental plagiarism
5. Mosaic plagiarism

Self Plagiarism:

Self Plagiarism is when an author copies some lines from his own previous work without including citation.

Direct Plagiarism:

This is when an author copies another man's work word to word and back to back without adding quotation marks to it.

Paraphrased Plagiarism:

This is when an author makes some changes in another person's work and passes it off as his own without including citation.

Accidental Plagiarism:

This happens when citation source is missing in a content which is due to incorrect citation.

Mosaic Plagiarism:

This happens when an author joins both Direct Plagiarism and paraphrased plagiarism in his content/work without applying adequate quotations.

How to avoid Plagiarism

• "Cite your source correctly
• Include quotation marks around the text to >denote that the words are not your own.
• present your own idea
• use a plagiarism checker
• paraphrase: Paraphrasing is rewriting a source’s ideas or information into your own words, without changing its meaning. But be careful—paraphrasing can slip into plagiarism if done incorrectly.
Successfully paraphrasing without plagiarizing involves a bit of a dance. Reword and format your writing in an original way, and try to avoid using too many similar words or phrases from the source. The key is to do so without altering the meaning of the idea itself. Remember, you’re still using another’s idea so you’ll need to include a citation to the source". source
