Hello fellow steemians.

This is my presentation on plagiarism @achievement3. Do well to go through it while giving me feedback on the ups and lows of the presentation. Also attend to the needs of the post as it would be greatly appreciated. Moving on to the point;

According to Wikipedia Plagiarism is the representation of another author’s languages, thought, ideas, or expressions as one’s own original work (Random house compact unabridged Dictionary, 1995). In educational contexts, there are differing definitions of plagiarism depending on the institution (Eaton & Elaine, 2017).

According to Oxford Dictionary, plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition.

Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional. Under the regulations for examinations, intentional or reckless plagiarism is a disciplinary offence.

Plagiarism is considered a violation of academic integrity and a breach of journalistic ethics. It is subject to sanction such as penalties, suspension, expulsion from school (“University bosses call for ban on essay writing companies” 27 september 2018) or work (“Daily News fires editor after shaun king accused of plagiarism” 19 April 2016).

Plagiarism might not be the same in all countries. Some countries, such as india and Poland, consider plagiarism to be a crime, and there have been cases of people being imprisoned for plagiarism (“Is plagiarism illegal?”, October 27, 2017).

Types of plagiarism source

Plagiarism may involve reusing an entire document, rewriting a single paragraph, or pasting phrases or sentences without proper credit
Some common types of plagiarism are :

Copy and paste plagiarism

This entails copying a passage from a source without a citation. When using a writer’s original words, the source must be quoted and cited properly.

Mosaic plagiarism

Mosaic plagiarism involves adopting various phrases, passages and ideas from different sources to create a kind of “mosaic” or “patchwork” of other author’s work, without proper citations

Self plagiarism

This becomes the issue when a writer reuses parts of his/her own previous work without acknowledging it. Self plagiarizing is important to take note of because your readers expect the work to be new and original, hence the need for citing even one’s own previous work.

Global plagiarism

Global plagiarism means submitting an entire work written by someone else. This may include having a freelancer or a friend write your paper for you or buying an essay from an online essay mill. This is a severe form of plagiarism because of the deliberate misguiding of the readers as regarding the authorship of the work.

Avoiding plagiarism

The following guidelines are helpful in avoiding plagiarism

  1. When including an exact phrase, sentence or passage from a source, use a quotation
  2. When trying to express an idea or information from a source, paraphrase or summarize it entirely in your own words.
  3. Always cite the source when you quote, paraphrase or summarize.

Is it necessary to cite every single piece of information?

Some information are deemed facts or common knowledge in a particular field of study or in generality. Such information need not be cited. They are information that are widely known and easily validated or verified.
For example if you state that George Washington is the first president of the United States, no citation is needed. But if you are not sure that something is common knowledge, it would be best to safeguard your peace by citing the source.

Thank you for your time.
