### YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR MEMORY

Memory is the faculty of the brain by which data or information is encoded, stored and retrieve when needed. It is the retention of information over time for the purpose of influencing future action. If past events could not be remembered, it would be impossible for language, relationships, or personal identity to develop. Memory loss is usually described as forgetfulness or amnesia.

Memory process

The brain encodes information when it perceives it and register it, this information can then be stored for future retrieval.
When the 3 stages of memory that is encoding, storage and retrieval break down, memory failure occurs, it result in memory failure.

Types of memory

TYPESFUNCTIONS
Sensory memoryreceives information from stimuli through senses such as smell, sight and thought.
Short term memoryholds small amount of information for a brief period of time.
Long term memoryholds information foe a long time.

Ways to improve your memory

1)Stimulate your memory by learning new skills, new language or a musical instruments.

2)Learn mnemonics techniques: A mnemonic is a strategy or device that helps us store information in the long-term memory and recall it when needed.

3)Get enough sleep; during sleep, the brain stored memories

4)Drink sufficient water, dehydration can cause mental confusion.

5)Relax while you are studying, stress triggers the release of cortisols, which can disrupt nerve interaction.

6)Avoid alcohol abuse and smoking. Alcohol interferes with short-term memory, and alcoholism can lead to a deficiency of thiamine, a B-vitamin that is essential to the proper working of the memory. Smoking reduces oxygen to the brain.

FOODS THAT CAN IMPROVE THE MEMORY

  1. Fatty fish e.g sardines and salmon
  2. Whole grains cereals e.g oatmeal, soyabeans
  3. Tumeric
  4. Nuts
  5. Fruits and vegetables
  6. Eggs
  7. Nuts
  8. Green tea

Yes, you can train and improve your memory. As studies have shown, our memory is much like a muscle. The more we use it, the stronger it gets, even into old age.
