What is Plagiarism?
"Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement"source. It is an offence whereby a person represents another person's thought, ideas, work or language- published or unpublished- as his/hers.
Plagiarism can be said to be theft and fraud committed simultaneously source. It can be deliberate or accidental. Sometimes, people are not aware that they are actually involving themselves in this act. Forms may include:
Downloading pictures and videos from the internet and using them as yours without citing the source of the media.
Using someone else's ideas without referring back to the author.
Copying and pasting from the web indiscriminately.
Wrong paraphrasing or summarization i.e paraphrasing in a way that almost everything in the text is verbatim from the source with just a few change of words.
Whether deliberate or accidental, plagiarism is a criminal offence. Luckily, there are ways to prevent yourself from falling into it:
Have a full understanding of the context you want to write about before you begin. This will help you to give your own opinions and views to topic.
Make sure you understand paraphrasing and learn how to do it the right way devoid copying verbatim from the source.
Always make sure to credit the writer or the source by adding citations.
