#Achievement3: Content Etiquette

in Newcomers' Community8 months ago

Hello all,
Today, I'm ready to share my Achievement 3 post as part of the Steemit Newcomers Achievement Program.

I am trying to keep it precise as well as simple. Mostly we are dealing with subject plagiarism which is our main concern. Because it comes under an ethical & legal umbrella of owning something which is not yours & without credits or citations.

What is Plagiarism?
Plagiarism is the act of presenting someone else's work, ideas, words, or intellectual property as your own, without giving them proper credit or permission. It involves using or reproducing someone else's content without acknowledging the original source. (According to dictionary defination)

2.webp

So basically it's an illegal & unethical act. It can come into any areas of content creation, may be in written context or visual content.

There are various types of Plagiarism as follows.

Copy-and-Paste Plagiarism.
As the name suggests it's like directly copying & pasting from source without citing a source.

3.webp

Paraphrasing Plagiarism:
There may be someone else's idea but rewriting the same idea in your own words without proper attribution.

4.webp

Mosaic or Patch-writing Plagiarism:
It is about mixing words, paragrafs, sentences, phrases with slightly modification in the language from various sources.

6.webp

Self-Plagiarism:
This might be confusing, but yes!
If you submit your work previous work as new, origional without proper citation, it is self-plgarism.

7.webp

Accidental Plagiarism:
As name suggest you use someone else's work accidently without giving credit to the sourse may be due to unawareness or carelessly.

8.webp

Consequences:

As we have seen it's illegal as well as unethical in nature, it might affect majorly in two ways.

Legal Consequences:

Copyright Violations:
If used material comes under a copyright issue, there might be legal consequences leading to legal actions by the source owner.

Financial Penalties: Legal consequences may include financial penalties for damages resulting from copyright infringement.

10.webp

Ethical and Personal Consequences:

Loss of Trust and Credibility:
It can result in a loss of trust and credibility among peers, colleagues, and mentors & on social media platforms like steemit.

Damage to Personal Integrity:
You may experience a sense of guilt, shame, or damage to their personal integrity.

How to avoid plagiarism

Cite Sources Properly:
When using someone else's words, ideas, or information, provide a proper citation.

12.webp

Understand Paraphrasing:
When paraphrasing, rephrase the content in your own words while retaining the original meaning.
Additionally, provide a citation to acknowledge the source of the information.

13.webp

Seek Permission:
If you want to use someone else's work in a way that goes beyond fair use, seek permission from the copyright holder.

Unique or original idea:
Try to present unique or original idea or concept emerged from your mind with your own form.

14.webp

So in a nutshell a thumb-rule: Give proper credit to the source or present a citation for reference.

conclusion
In conclusion it's a serious offence & you should try to avoid it as come to know about it.
Original work, or works with citations tries to embrace the principles of honesty, originality,
and respect for intellectual property of creator/owner.
It also fosters culture of integrity & respect for originality.
