PLAGIARISM

Many people think of plagiarism as copying another's work or borrowing someone's else's original idea. The term copying and borrowing can or help in disgusing the seriousness of the offence.

Plagiarism is an act of fraud which involves stealing one's work and lying about it afterwards. Which involves :

  • To steal and pass off one's idea or work as yours.

  • To commit literally theft.

  • To use another one's production without crediting the source.

  • To present a new and original ideas from an existing source.

The necessity to acknowledge others work or ideas applies not only to text but also other media such as illustrations etc. Applies to published text and data drawn from books and journals.

Plagiarism matters because it is a principle of intellectual honesty that all members of the academic community should acknowledge their Dept to the originator of the idea,words and data which form the basis for their own work. Passing off another person's work totally means that you have failed to complete the learning process

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

  • Direct plagiarism.
  • Mosaic plagiarism.
  • Self plagiarism.
  • lncremental plagiarism.

DIRECT PLAGIARISM

Direct plagiarism takes place when the writers copies the entire text or data of one's work without he's own knowledge. It includes purchasing an essay or turning in an assignment complete by someone else.

SELF PLAGIARISM

Self plagiarism involves recycling or passing of your previous work that you have already submitted.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM

Mosaic plagiarism comes in the form of changing the words of the the original writers but thesame meaning and passing it out as your own work.

INCREMENTAL PLAGIARISM

Incremental plagiarism involves inserting a small amount of plagiarized content in a mostly original text.

CITING A SOURCE

Citation is a medium that identifies for a reader the original source for an idea,information or image that is referred to in a work.

Inorder to cite a source you are required to add the greater than sign (>) before the sentence to enable you site a source. Examples are:

How to cite a photo

Inorder to cite a photo or image the writer is to use [source] and then write the link next to it in a bracket ( put the link of the source) and then you have successfully source your photo. Examples below :

Why is citing Important

  • To show your reader you've done proper research by listing sources you used to get your information.

  • To be a responsible scholar by giving credit to other researchers and acknowledging their ideas.

  • To avoid plagiarism by quoting words and ideas used by other authors.

  • To allow your reader to track down the sources you used by citing them accurately in your paper by way of footnotes, a bibliography or reference list.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

  • Don't procrastinate with your research and assignments. Good research takes time.
  • Commit to doing your own work. If you don't understand an assignment, talk with your professor.
  • Be 100% scrupulous in your note taking.
  • Cite your sources scrupulously.
  • Understand good paraphrasing.

  • The writer should observe quotation marks to enable the reader understand what the writer is talking about.
