I really appreciated your topic. I heard a lecture the other day on YouTube in which the professor discussed mankind being unique from any other creature because of his ability to perceive time. We don't just act in a given moment with our best interest for that moment at heart. We have the unique ability to perceive that our actions today mean something tomorrow. This means ideas such as hope can exist. We sometimes take short term suffering in hopes of prosperity in the long term.
