in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Hello, my good friends in steemit,

I am happy to be given this chance to write on plagiarism and content etiquette in the Steemit.
It usually fell sad and painful for someone to steal your ideas, thoughts, expressions as one's original work.

This act is called plagiarism.

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is when someone presents facts, ideas, images as his or her own without crediting the original author or without citation of the original content.
Most often, content like stories, photos, videos, songs are usually plagiarized.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

Verbatim Plagiarizing:
It is the direct word-for-word copying of part or whole of someone else's work without giving that person credit. This Word-for-word copying of one's work without acknowledging the source, whether it is intentional or not, is a severe crime that should be stopped. Below is an example of verbatim plagiarism;

Global plagiarism
It refers to the act of presenting an entire content or work of another person without crediting the original author. This type is one of the most severe forms of plagiarism, leading to imprisonment or fine in some countries.

Paraphrasing Plagiarism
This is the rephrasing part of a text in your own words without citation, this is the commonest sort of plagiarism.
Paraphrasing itself isn't plagiarism if you properly cite your sources. However, paraphrasing becomes plagiarism once you read a source then rewrite its key points as if they were your own ideas.
Additionally, if texts are translated to another language, one needs to correctly cite the original source of the work. A translation without properly citing the source remains plagiarism since you are using another person's ideas.

Self Plagiarism
Self-plagiarism can also occur when you use phrases, ideas, or data from your previous work. As with paraphrasing, reworking old ideas and passages isn't inherently plagiarism, but you ought to cite your previous work to make the source clear. You are to cite your work if you are reusing some content from it.

Mosaic Plagiarism
Mosaic plagiarism (also referred to as patchwork plagiarism or incremental plagiarism) means copying phrases, passages, and concepts from different sources and putting them together to make a replacement text. This includes slightly rephrasing passages while keeping many of the equivalent words and structure of the original content.

EFFECTS OF PLAGIARISM

If people are unsure of the consequences of plagiarism or rather doubt them, below are some of the many ways plagiarism can affect you.

  1. Plagiarism can lead to expulsion from your course, or school.
  2. Plagiarism can lead to the rejection of one's work.
  3. Plagiarism can result in legal action, fines, and penalties against the culprit.

HOW TO AVIOD PLAGIARISM

Follow these four steps to ensure your paper is free from plagiarism:
1.Keep track of the sources you consult in your research.
2.Paraphrase or quote from your sources (and add your own ideas).
3.Credit the original author in an in-text citation and reference list.
4.Use a plagiarism checker before you submit.

CITATION

Citation is when someone tells his or her readers that some part of their work came
from a different source. It also gives the readers the knowledge needed to seek out the
source details on the reference or Works Cited page.
A set of parentheses should be added when citing content. Without a set of parenthesis, one does not
have a proper t in-text citation which can be seen as plagiarism.

TYPES OF CITATION

  1. Modern Language Association(MLA)

  2. American Psychological Association(APA)

  3. Chicago or Turabian style

WHY CITATION IS IMPORTANT

Citing your sources is important for various reasons, including the following;

  1. Citation gives credit and acknowledgment to the authors of the sources.

2.It provides the reader with more details on the sources been used.

3.It shows the credibility in one's work.

4.It also prevents plagiarism and its consequences.

The easiest way to prevent plagiarism and its consequences is by correctly citing your sources during the research and citing your sources in your writing and presentations.

EXAMPLE OF CITATION

Computer helps one to get work done faster electronically.

" Computers have created a very effective information system to help streamline the management of an organization. This makes it a much-needed tool for every business, banking, government, entertainment, daily life, industry, education, and administration.".

source

From the above sentences, it has only one original sentence:

That is; the Computer helps one to get work done faster electronically.

The second statement is directly copied from a source without any changes made to it, thus quoted:

" Computers have created a very effective information system to help streamline the management of an organization. This makes it a much-needed tool for every business, banking, government, entertainment, daily life, industry, education, and administration."

CONCLUSION

Plagiarism is a serious crime which should be avoided at all cost.
Since one does not know everything, ideas can be borrowed from other sources by correctly citing their source to prevent any form of plagiarism.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them
