Hello fellow stemians
I’ll be writing today on plagiarism
Plagiarism is a word which is derived from Latin , Plagiarus which means “kidnapper”. Plagiarism refers to the presentation of someone else’s work of art or ideas as own work, with or without their consent , incorporating it into your work without full recognition or acknowledgment of the original owner.
Cases of plagiarism have been noticed in journalism, speeches, motivational talks, academics and many more.

People often practice plagiarism in many different ways and some of the common forms which are usually practiced would be seen below;

ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM: This often occurs when a person ignores, neglects or doesn’t make an effort to Cite their sources or the person intentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words,misquotes their sources. One of the main cause of accidental plagiarism either being disorganized or just being confused. For example not knowing or even understanding how to paraphrase or use quotations properly.

SELF PLAGIARISM: This refers to another form of plagiarism whereby republishes a new work or the writer reuses some parts of an already published text meanwhile he is writing a new piece. We should also take not that self plagiarism involves the reuse of an already published work of the same author.

DIRECT PLAGIARISM: this is another kind of plagiarism which involves word for word transcription of the portion or a section of someone else’s without adding attributes or even quotation marks. This usually invites sanctions and suspensions especially when it involves academics.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM: This kind of plagiarism is a little bit alike with direct plagiarism. It occurs when a student borrows words , statements or phrases from a source without assigning quotation marks on the borrowed words or finds related words or synonyms for the borrowed word while staying in line with the same structure as in the original.

HOW CAN YOU AVOID PLAGIARISM?
-Paraphrase or quote from your sources and then you can add your own ideas
-keep track of the sources which you consult in your research.
-Show a sign of recognition or credit the original author in an intext citation and reference list.
