WHAT IS PLAGIARISM

To my own understanding Plagiarism is the act of using someone's work without permission.

"According to University of Oxford
Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement." Source

"Plagiarism can also cause a multitude of effects on one’s inspiration and creative expression. Stealing intellectual property results in decreased motivation on part of the plagiarist to produce original material, while the plagiarized party is robbed of rightful credit, exposure, and profit for their work. Due to lack of personal motivation and interest on part of the plagiarist, their own creative expression or ability to develop creative material may wane as well. Without mastering the appropriate abilities and skills to perform research, writing, design, or artistic creation, a plagiarist is unable to continually hone their mind in relation to their chosen field, often displaying a reduced capacity for ingenuity and creative thinking." Types of Plagiarism

We have many types of Plagiarism. Am just going to talk about the 4 common ones.

Direct Plagiarism

This is the type of Plagiarism where the plagiarist copy's the Author's work or Ideas "word-for-word without attribution and without quotation marks. The deliberate plagiarism of someone else's work is unethical, academically dishonest, and grounds for disciplinary actions, including expulsion.

Self Plagiarism

Self-plagiarism occurs when a someone or a student submits his or her own previous work, or mixes parts of previous works, without permission from all professors involved. For example, it would be unacceptable to incorporate part of a term paper you wrote in high school into a paper assigned in a college course. Self-plagiarism also applies to submitting the same piece of work for assignments in different classes without previous permission from both professors.

Mosaic Plagiarism

Mosaic Plagiarism occurs when a student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds synonyms for the author’s language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original. Sometimes called patch writing, this kind of paraphrasing, whether intentional or not, is academically dishonest and punishable even if you footnote your source.

Accidental Plagiarism

Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution. We must learn how to cite our sources and to take careful and accurate notes when doing research. Lack of intent does not absolve us of responsibility for plagiarism. Cases of accidental plagiarism are taken as seriously as any other plagiarism and are subject to the same range of consequences as other types of plagiarism." Source

Consequences of Plagiarism

  1. It Destroys Students Reputation: The student involved might be suspended or expulsion from the school.

  2. It Destroys An Academic or Reputation: If the plagiarist is found guilty, it will end his or her writing career.

  3. Legal Impact: It is a serious ethical issue and also a big legal issue and crime.

  4. Monetary Fines or Penalties: The defaulter might end up paying a huge money to compensate the original owner of the work.

5)Destroy Professional Fame and Name: When you default, in some case you will end up in prison, or you loose your reputation as a writer or you loose your job.

How To Avoid Plagiarism

"There is no immune from it and the best way to be save from plagiarism is to totally avoid plagiarism at any cost.

Thus, there are also other ways to avoid plagiarism and save your career & reputation also from legal action. These are as follows:

  1. You can avoid using plagiarized content by just playing and moulding the words and sentences in many ways. You can take an idea from a particular source, but you must write that idea by using your own imagination and unique writings.

  2. You can take writing ideas from more than one source. You can also cite the references of the sources to maintain the authenticity of the written paper by you." Source

Conclusion

"Therefore, now you are informed about the ill-effects and consequences of plagiarism. You must never follow plagiarism or use plagiarized content in your writing projects. This will make you avoid any kind of legal problem and other punishments which are associated with this offence.

There are also some ways discussed which can help you avoid plagiarism. So, present a unique written academic assignment writing or professional writing which is free from plagiarism." Source
