ACHIEVEMENT3 TASK: CONTENT ETIQUETTE BY @barna.uzoigwe

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Hello, my dear Steemians, I am happy and grateful for the little grounds covered so far, as a newbie, having completed my achievement1 and achievement2 tasks respectively.
Next is my achievement3 task, 'Content Etiquette'. It examines how much I understand the meaning of producing and sharing quality content as a newbie without flaunting the existing etiquette in the Steem Community which frowns heavily at "PLAGIARISM"

PLAGIARISM - MEANING, DEFINITIONS...

"PLAGIARISM originated from the Latin word 'Plagiarus' which means to kidnap."

My own understanding of the above definition is that plagiarism can also mean the kidnap of the original content of a written material without the right permission of its Author. The act of producing another person's creation without duely acknowledging the person (who is the Creator) is my own definition likened to the context of 'information kidnap' used above to break down 'plagiarism' to a layman's understanding.
A scholar who is neck deep into plagiarism is practically an 'Impostor', from my own point of view. An Impostor in this context, parades himself or herself as a creator, producer, or original author etc. of any given material he/she presents at any particular point in time to an unsuspecting audience, because, such impostor has refused to credit his/her achievement to the grand source of the information. But today, it is cheering to say that with the recent advancements in information technology, it is now, very possible, to detect plagiarised materials.

Another definition from my research has plagiarism to mean

"stealing intellectual property or an intellectual fraud".

My understanding of the above definition is that plagiarism is the act of manipulating one or more ideas of others to suit one's cause towards achieving a task, and neglecting the genuine efforts of the original owners of the ideas they used to succeed. As good as their piece of work may appear, it remains a plagiarised piece. Plagiarism is fraud, cheating, a malpractice, falsehood, and a huge deviation of what quality education and genuine research stand for.

The problem of plagiarism, to me, is now endemic in our studying environment and it will not go away easily, even the Holy Bible recorded in the Book of Ecclesiastics Chapter 1v9 that:

"there is no new thing under the sun".

This quoted verse shows clearly that research work has existed right from the mediaeval times, it is just the mechanism of storing the outcome every research that kept improving across generations, from using stone to tabloids, then the libraries, encyclopaedias and today, with the use of online search machines. So why will a Scholar refuse to quote or give credit to the source of his/her information? Playing smart by using synonyms and alternative sentences is fake and generally unacceptable by all standards.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM
I have broken down the concept of plagiarism with a variety of explanations above, and therefore will just highlight a few sentences on the various patterns of plagiarism;

There is 'Direct Plagiarism' which has to do with copy and paste, copying verbatim from another person's work without changing the wordings.

There is 'Self Plagiarism' which is when reuses an old work without the permission of an authority or professor in the field of research done.

There is 'Mosaic Plagiarism' which is combining one or more ideas of others to suit one's task.

There is also the 'Accodental Plagiarism'

CONSEQUENCES OF PLAGIARISM
Are there consequences to this act of plagiarism? Yes of course, because the act in its entirety is an insincere and fraudulent way of achieving a given task.
Plagiarism is a crime and should be punishable according to the laws guiding any given setup where it is committed.
In academics, it is regarded as malpractice, theft of intellect and a rut in the foundation of the academic system.
In the Steem Community, I strongly believe that it is an unacceptable behaviour. It is heavily frowned at and never tolerated. The work of any Steem participants caught in this act is immediately rejected and flagged. That alone is a tougher punishment, considering the time, energy and resources invested into such presentation.

Thanks to my Colleague and Friend @xkool24 for his quide in this achievement task.

"I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them."
