Plagiarism is alive and well. Even in the internet age, despite high-tech protocols to detect copied documents, works, and creations, it remains a multi-faceted and hotly-discussed topic. It is defined in many ways by the variation of its forms when it occurs, however the definition I found that sums it up nicely is this:

One aspect of plagiarism that is timely and relevant, especially based on my just “borrowing” the screencapture of the definition of plagiarism itself (legally, with citations, giving proper credit, thank you very much): plagiarism of digital and online works.

Copying and passing off forgeries of unique digital artwork, music, video and the like is impossible with the advent of the NFT. NFTs, or “non-fungible tokens” are creations that come with guarantees of their genuine nature. Because the proof of ownership is recorded on a blockchain, their originality is unquestionable:

“The gold rush for NFTs -- essentially cryptological certificates of authenticity -- is well underway. On Thursday, Christie's, the 255-year-old British auction house, closed the sale of its first-ever digital-only art piece, a composite of 5,000 pieces created over as many days by the artist Beeple. The final price tag is an eye-popping $69.3 million.”" Source

That’s all well and good for the monied class, whose wealth and beneficence allow them to afford lavish payments for the artist, but what of the typical starving artist, are they able to do the same? Aren’t they more likely to have their creations ripped off and passed along by a “thought thief” (don’t steal that one, I just came up with it myself)? What exactly can the average person do to protect themselves against someone taking their intellectual property?

I’ll look into it and get back to you. In fact, I’m going to see what I need to do to get my new phrase immortalized in a techno dance mix, which I will ensure will never unrightfully be copied.

One thing I do know: this is the most exhilarating time most intellectual property lawyers will ever experience.
