in Newcomers' Community3 years ago (edited)

Greetings steemians, I am excited to have my achievement 2 post verified. In this achievement 3, I will showing my understanding of the content Etiquette on steemit.

Vast knowledge, thoughts, ideas, articles, journals, videos and images already exist in our modern day, and to be factual, writing some articles, conducting researches, creating contents to an extent does not require a writer to reinvent the wheels. Therefore Content creators, writers, researchers sometimes build on already existing ideas, expressions or resources that are available online or offline. This is a wonderful and acceptable idea if done properly. This brings me to the topical issue plagiarism.

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work.[1][2] In educational contexts, there are differing definitions of plagiarism depending on the institution. source. To copy another person’s ideas, words or work and pretend that they are your own source

The two definitions above are from wikipedia and oxford dictionary respectively. So basically plagiarism has to do with using peoples intellectual properties in such a way that it looks like we did it ourself. This can be intentional or a mistake.

Types of plagiarism

Global plagiarism
means taking an entire work by someone else and passing it off as your own.source. Lifting someones work and presenting it as yours is global plagiarism.

Verbatim plagiarism
Verbatim plagiarism is also called direct plagiarism, means copying and pasting text into your own work without attribution. .source

Sometimes it is necessary to quote authors word for word, but this should be done properly by putting the words in quotation marks and citing it close to the quoted text.

Paraphrasing plagiarism
means rephrasing a piece of text in your own words. Paraphrasing without citation is the most common type of plagiarism. .source

A whole lot of writers are guilty of this type of plagiarism. They re-write what is existing already using different words. Some writers do this innocently in order to make it easier to understand while others do it just to steal ideas. But which ever is the case a proper citation is just the best solution.

Patchwork Plagiarism
Patchwork plagiarism means plagiarizing parts of different sources and stitching them together into a new work.source

Self-plagiarism
Self-plagiarism means recycling your own previous work. source

Panacea for plagiarism

My recommendation to avoid the above scenario in the picture above is that Writers should study to understand what they want to work on, avoid laziness, procrastination, and make proper citation when referencing or borrowing ideas from other authors.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them

This is my achievement 3
