Steem Plants Contest : Week #15

Plants are very important to follow-on the mankind and other animals. They absorb carbon dioxide and release the oxygen which essential for the breath. Plants are the main food resources; they are the primary producers in every food chain. Some plants have medicinal value while some have ornamental value. Here are some plants which can see in my home garden and nearby places.

• Ginger plant -(Zingiber officinale)

Ginger is a very common plant in our country. It has elongated, dark green leaves. Mostly we use the rhizome of the plant (ginger roots - called simply as ginger) for different purposes. Having a cup of tea is a inevitable part in most of Sri Lankans daily routine and ginger always make the tea more delicious. I believe that it has a power to reduce stress, tiredness and period pains as I experienced it. Also it is a savory plant. We add chopped ginger to our curries to increase the taste and sweet-smell. Our elders believe that ginger can facilitate our food digestion. So it always takes a great place in recipes. Propagation of the ginger plant is done by it's rhizomes. So we don't have to put much effort to propagate it.

• Lucky Plant - (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

This plant is also known as ZZ plant. Our native peoples called it as a "lucky plant", because they think this plant bring luck and prosperity to the home. It's leaves are illuminative and dark green in color. This plant is easy to grow and care. I also heard that this plant can cause positive effects on oxygen condition when it placed inside the home or office.

• Turmeric plant - (Curcuma longa)

Turmeric also propagate by their rhizome and light green in color. Dried, powdered turmeric rhizome (turmeric) use as a condiment in our country. Women apply turmeric on face to get glowing skin and apply on wounds as it can heal more quickly. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the turmeric provide these benefits to us. I think everyone should plant at least one turmeric plant in their home garden as it is very useful plant.

• Ornamental plants

I actually don't know the name of these plants. I plant them just because of their beauty. I got those plants from my neighbor. The white one change its' color when it expose to sun light.
