History:

- Formerly included in Kushtia River District (now in West Bengal, India). In 189 a municipality was established in Kushtia. Hamilton's Gazette first mentions the city of Kushtia. The shrine of Baul emperor Lalon Sai is located at Chheuria village in Chapra union of Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia district.
  • Of course, Kushtia is not an ancient city. A river port was established here during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan. Although the British East India Company used the port more, urbanization started soon after the arrival of indigo growers and indigo planters. In 180 a direct railway line was established with Calcutta (then the capital of the East India Company). That is why this region was considered as an ideal place for industries. At that time Yajneshwar Engineering Works (1898), Renwick and Yajneshwar Company (1904) and Mohini Mills (1919) were established.
During the partition of India in 1947, Kushtia emerged as a separate district. Its subdivisions were Kushtia Sadar, Chuadanga and Meherpur. The Ganga-Kopotaksh project was headquartered in 1954 under the then SD and Maulvi Abdul Bari Biswas. Apart from this, after the establishment of several more government offices in Kushtia, the development of the city started again.

Greater Kushtia-

  • From a historical point of view, Kushtia is a large district consisting of several subdivisions, each of which later became a district. But for the people of these three districts Chuadanga, Meherpur and Kushtia, greater Kushtia is not just a thing of the past, it is more. It may be specially mentioned that the oral language of the original inhabitants of this region and the undivided Nadia district bears a close resemblance to modern standard Bengal. The larger society of the inhabitants of these three districts is called the greater Kushtia district. Various organizations such as: "Greater Kushtia Association", "Greater Kushtia Samaj" are working for the development of the people of these three districts.

  • Agriculture:

- Like other parts of Bangladesh, Kushtia also cultivates mainly paddy, jute, sugarcane, pulses, oilseeds etc. However, tobacco and drinking cultivation is also noticeable in the district.

Economy:

  • Like other parts of Bangladesh, Kushtia is not only dependent on agriculture. Besides agriculture, industrial factories have been set up in Kushtia. There are many tobacco factories in Kushtia. Nasir Tobacco Limited and British-American Tobacco are notable among them. BRB is the largest electric wire factory in Bangladesh. Cables are located in Kushtia. High quality fabric industry has developed in Kumarkhali upazila of the district. Fabrics produced here are being exported beyond the borders of the country. Besides, there are numerous rice mills in Kushtia. With the development of different factories, there is less reliance on agriculture alone.
    Impressive place
Kushtia is an ancient town. Formerly Kushtia was a subdivision of Nadia district. For this reason, there are many places to visit in Kushtia.

Rabindranath's Kuthibari: Shilaidaha Kuthibari of Kumarkhali Upazila is associated with the memory of Rabindranath. The poet has composed many songs and poems here in Amrakan. Due to lack of reforms, the condition of Kuthibari is bad at present. Yet poet lovers can come here and learn a lot about the poet. The house is currently being used as a museum.

Shrine of Fakir Lalon Saiji: Fakir Lalon Sai, the Baul emperor of Bengal, performed his duties at Chheuria village in Chapra union of Kumarkhali upazila of Kushtia district. His shrine is now operated as a stable for the Bauls. For Lalon devotees, therefore, the region is considered as a holy land.

Pakshi Railway Bridge: The largest railway bridge in Bangladesh is at Bheramara in Kushtia. A span of the Hardinge Bridge was destroyed by aircraft during the 1971 War of Liberation.

Lalon Shah Bridge: As the second largest bridge in Bangladesh, the "Lalon Shah" Bridge was laid on the Padma River in Kushtia District on 13 January 2001 by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and inaugurated by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
