Welcome to the second week of the engagement challenge for season 6. This is my second entry into this week's engagement program. It is indeed a wonderful topic to discuss because we all in one way or another other have been teachers. I'm going to be attempting the questions below to show my full participation in the contest. Let's get started.

Whose teacher are you? Do you teach for a living?
We all are teachers in our various ways of life. As the eldest son of my parents, I always try to teach my siblings how they should live their lives so that they don't get to regret it tomorrow. More also, as a graduate and a lecturer assistant with the department of Computers at the college of education Akwanga, I also teach undergraduate students.
Yes, I teach for a living at the moment. I love teaching and at the moment I'm also learning the process of impacting knowledge because I'm attending a teacher's training program and I'm also showcasing this knowledge obtained in the classroom by teaching undergraduate students. I'm still schooling though but it is my earnest desire to end up as a teacher in my career.
What challenges have you faced as a teacher?
There are numerous challenges I have faced as a teacher and a few of these challenges will be listed below.
- Inadequate instructional materials
- Lack of interest or concentration from students
- Language barrier
Inadequate instructional materials: One of the major challenges I have faced as a teacher is the unavailability or the inadequacy of instructional aids. As computer teachers, the desktops used to transmit knowledge to the students are not sufficient and even those available, most of them are not in very good health.
Lack of interest or concentration from students: Another major issue is the lack of concentration from the students. Most of the students are not willing to learn hence it becomes more difficult to transmit the knowledge to them. A lot don't want any change and they prefer using the old ways of doing things and that makes teaching the computer difficult.
Language barrier: This is another serious challenge I faced as a teacher. The official language used in teaching here is English but most of the students came from very remote villages and don't understand English properly. They only understand their native language better and that made it difficult for me to teach properly.
How do you create a learning environment that is both stimulating and supportive?
As a teacher, the first thing to do before you start transmitting knowledge is to ensure that the learning environment is conducive enough. To do that, I always ensure I take complete control of the class by telling the students to all sit down and keep quiet. When the arena is silent, then I will bring a little story to motivate them and then usher us into the topic of discussion for the day.
What professional development opportunities have you pursued to improve your teaching practice?
As I have earlier stated, as a degree holder, I have always loved the teaching line and to improve my teaching skills, I enrolled into a programme called NTI (National Teachers Institute). This is a one-year programme that teaches you how you can effectively become a very good teacher. After the programme, you will have to be tested and be sure you display all the qualities of a good teacher before you can be given certification as a registered teacher. I'm still in the process of being a certified teacher at the moment.
At present, higher education is very expensive. What is your opinion on this, or is there any alternative to it?
Truly, higher education at the moment tends to be very expensive especially here in my country Nigeria. Most people at present can afford to go to university because of how expensive schools are at the moment. In my opinion, the school should be made affordable because many good heads could have brought about serious changes in the country if they have the privilege to go to school but because they didn't, their dreams and aspiration dies off.
Government should instead provide a lesser expensive education system or better still a free education for all a citizen so that the youths who are enjoying these will in turn work for the betterment of the country. This is the only way a country can grow more fastly.
Being a teacher is not just the ability to read and write, you must be an example for others to follow. As a teacher, you need to go through a series of training to help build you on how to handle students on different occasions. I'm delighted to have enrolled in the NTI programme which at the moment is modelling me to become the best version of myself. It is good that you have a profession that is very useful to society, because teaching well requires professional preparation and a vocation to give the best of oneself so that others can learn. Education is a fundamental pillar of a country's progress, therefore it must have the maximum financial, teaching, technical, artistic, etc. support to enhance the talents of its citizens. Unfortunately today it is highly expensive but policies should be improved to make it more accessible.
In my country education is free, but it is of no use when the regime that governs us has destroyed not only its organizational structure but also its infrastructure, and has even made private or paid education begin to disappear. We are living decades of great deterioration in all aspects that has made more than 6 million Venezuelans emigrate.
It seems that education is the number one enemy of politicians and tyrannical governments, because they know that democracy and freedom are born there.
