Tourism sector in my country has suffered a draw back in over two decades now, with the exception of the Obasanjo led administration between 1999-2007, where one of the industrious governor from the South South region, governor Donald Duke created the Tinappa, the Obudu Cattle Ranch and Resort and the Calabar Carnival, in Cross River State, which then used to attract visitors from all over the world to Nigeria.
Since after that administration, the tourism sector has dropped down drastically in such a way that it now contributes to only 2-3% of the total GDP. This is nothing in comparison with its other African counterparts of Kenya, Sychelle, Rwanda, South Africa or even the neighbouring Ghana. The cause of this is not far from government focus and reliability on the oil sector. Other factors could be insecurity, lack of infrastructure, and non investment and private-public partnership.
Meanwhile the tourism sector if adequately developed has the potential to provide the youths with employment, increase government revenues and accelerate rural development. The country is blessed with divert kinds of tourism sites such as the popular Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross River Yankari game reserve Bouchi, Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State could all be developed to international standard.

Share two popular tourist spots in your country and the reason why they are so popular?
The two popular sites for tourism in my country are the Obudu cattle ranch now Obudu Mountain Resorts located in Cross River State in the South-South region. It has attraction sites like mountain climbing, water falls and springs, cattle ranch, hicking site, golfing, hotels and bars, restaurant for both intercontinental and local dishes.
The next one is the Yankari Game Reserve which is located in Bauchi the Northeast of Nigeria. It is a large wildlife park covering about 2,244sqm. It harbours natural warm water springs with flora and fauna. It's a home for national wildlife reserve of the elephants and lions. Tourists and holiday makers can visit to watch wildlife in its natural environment.
Do foreign tourists visit these spots? What special facilities are there for them?
Yes during the festive period like December where the Calabar Carnival used to host, many foreign visitors from different nations flock Obudu cattle Ranch and Mountain resorts to view different tourist sites there.
At Obudu Mountain Resort, there are many tourist attraction sites such mountain where they have mountain race, outdoor games like golfing, hicking, swimming and horse riding, cable riding car that takes visitors on a ride around the mountain. Restaurants and bars, guest houses are also available to give visitors the ultimate enjoyment and fulfilment they deserve and the tour budget is relatively cheaper.
What kind of improvement do you think is needed to increase the visibility of foreign tourists there?
Candidly, as a matter of urgent importance, Nigeria need to revamp it's tourism sector so as to drive growth in revenue generation, reduce youth unemployment and bring development to the rural areas. This can be achieved by giving priority to the sector, tackle insecurity, put the neccessary infrastructure in place,developing the other smaller tourist sites.
Do you know any spot that is not yet known to everyone but has the potential to become a popular tourist destination in the future
Yes ! That is Ibeno beach located at the Atlantic Ocean, Qua Iboe Mobil Terminal Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State which is endowed with captivating attractions such as a large sandy area covering about 5,455 sqm with view of the Atlantic Ocean, Coconut trees for sun shade, scenic environment with natural cool sea breeze, favourable weather condition with a temperature of less than 30c°
In summary, the Nigeria tourism Sector has not been prioritised for about decades ago, aside from the Obasanjo era, where governor Donald Duke of Cross River State took upon himself to revamp the then Obudu cattle ranch now, Obudu Mountain Resort, organising the popular Calabar Carnival during the festive period which welcome foreign visitors from all over the world, generate revenues to the state.
The government overdependence on crude led to this drift, other factors such as insecurity, lack of infrastructure and private-public partnership were also contributing to tourism staggering development, meanwhile the sector has the potential to create job for the teaming youths, contribute heavily to the growth of GDP and drive rural development.

Indeed, Nigeria is blessed with many tourists sites, I understand that the government gives little or no effort in the improvement of this sector currently which according to the development of this sector is necessary as a matter of urgency.

You're right my friend ever since obasanjo left government tourism have had drawbacks in terms if development, i am from cross river state and i am really greatfull for the work of our former governor in person of Donald Duke who developed the obudu cattle ranch and also the tinapa resort which habe brought more development and revenue to my state especially during the calabar carnival festival where different visitors all over the world come to enjoy our unique cultural diversity.
The obudu cattle ranch and the yankari game reserve which is located in bauchi State of Nigeria, are very popular tourist destination because it is welk developed and exposed to the entire world.
You will enjoy warm water, climbing of mountains and also different kinds of recreational activities that will make your stay ver memorable.
Foreigners do visit this place more than we Nigerians became they enjoy themselves, whenever you visit there you must see a foreign tourists enjoy his or her life.
They're good restaurants that cook's good food ans also a perfect accommodation for foreign tourists to stay.
The government should provide more security agencies by deploying them to work there, with time the ibeno beach ⛱️ located in akwa-ibom will be popular.
