The first day of the month of Baishakh is known as Bengali New Year to the people of Bangladesh. The Bengali New Year makes its debut by washing away all the gloom of the old year, ending the worn-out fatigue. After the introduction of the Bengali calendar, various ceremonies were added to the New Year celebrations. Nawabs and zamindars introduced 'Punyah' to collect rent. Now it is extinct due to lack of zamindari. Halkhata was the second major event of Pahela Boishakh. On this day, the customers would pay the remaining money to the shopkeepers.
