The work, talent and time of many people are involved in this bridge, which is the product of nearly two centuries of planning.

Project Director Md. Shafiqul Islam tells BBC Bangla, "Design, construction, supervision of Padma Bridge - these works have been done by many people together.

New Zealand-based consultancy Aecom was responsible for the design of the Padma Bridge. The design and engineering consulting firm officially started operations in 1990. However, their website claims that their company is 120 years old.

In 2009, the design work of Padma Bridge started under the leadership of this company in Hong Kong. But they were also accompanied by Australia's Esmec International Limited, Canada's North West Hydraulic Consultants and Bangladeshi ACE Consultants Limited.

Work on the Padma Bridge began on 26 November 2014. Padma Bridge is a two-story concrete and steel bridge. Padma Bridge is the 122nd bridge in the world and the largest bridge in Bangladesh.

Built over the Padma River, this bridge connects the two ends of the Padma River with Mawa in Munshiganj and Jajira Point in Shariatpur. As a result, the South-West part of the country will be connected with the North-East part.
The Padma Bridge was built by Bangladesh entirely on its own. The construction of Padma Bridge is considered to be the most challenging construction project in the history of Bangladesh. The two-story steel and concrete truss bridge has a four-lane carriageway on the upper level and a single rail track on the lower level.

Built on the Padma-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basin, the bridge consists of 41 spans, each span 150.12 meters (492.5 ft) long and 22.5 meters (74 ft) wide. The total length of the bridge is 6.15 km (3.82 mi). It is the longest bridge in Bangladesh, the longest bridge over the Ganges in terms of both number of spans and total length, and the world's deepest pile bridge with a depth of 128 meters (420 ft).

The bridge was inaugurated on 25 June 2022. On this day Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina personally climbed the Padma Bridge for the first time by paying the toll through the Mawa end and the bridge was opened.
