THE POWER OF SMILING BIG
A big smile boosts confidence. A big smile beats fear, rolls away worry, defeats despondency. A smile does more than curing our bad feelings. A good smile melts away the opposition of others. It is difficult for people to get angry at you if you give them a big, sincere smile. A mentor of mine, David Schwartz, told a story about what someone else’s smile did to him.
He was driving on a fateful day; when he had to parked at an intersection, waiting for the light to change, when BAM! The driver behind him had let his foot slip the brake and shattered his rear bumper. He became furious. He looked at his mirror and saw the man getting out of his car. David quickly got out of his car too. According to him, he had forgotten everything he knew about courtesy. He got ready to engage the man in verbal combat. He admitted he was ready verbally to bite the man to pieces. He approached the man with such intentions when, fortunately, something happened. Before he got the chance to attack the man, the man walked up to him, smiled, and said in the most earnest voice, "Friend I didn’t mean to do that.” The smile, coupled with the man’s sincere comment, melted David. He became as one hypnotized. He mumbled something about “That's okay, such things happen all the time.” In some few minutes, his opposition turned into friendship. That’s the power of smiling big. Smile big. It changes the way you feel, irrespective of what the situation may be. It also helps you to derive a solution when in tough situations, instead of being locked up in negative emotions that give no room for a way out. Though it may seem uneasy to smile when one is in some precarious situation, you have to forcefully do it. Harness the power of smiling big.
“You have to act confidently to feel confident”
