STEEM NIGERIA REALITY CONTEST #2: MY JOURNEY WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE

English Language to me is way more important than our mother tongue if we really want to look at it.

From the point of view of our complex and dynamic economy today, you may not really go far if English language is a major challenge to you.

One can only argue this fact if his or her dreams lie within their locality.

Unfortunately, I grew up with the ignorance of these facts.

My journey with English Language only started making sense in my senior secondary School when I made a personal determination to learn.

In my first level of education, I attended a school that English Language was nothing to them.

Teachers taught with the local language and no serious statement was ever made at home in English.

You can imagine how terrible it was for me to start learning a language I barely spoke or heard.

In my secondary School, the policy of paying a fine for using a local dialect was always on ground in our school but it didn't bother me at all.

I would whisper if I want to communicate with my friends so I wouldn't get caught.

Along the line, I was lucky to move in to the dormitory where there was a strict enforcement of the no local dialect policy.

That was when I started taking English language serious.

U started learning to speak. I also learned to read as someone who actually went to school.

My fluency was terrible when I started. My accent was nothing to write about. Often, I would mimic a movie line or imitate a celebrity or any public speaker.

I must admit that this journey is really not easy. My friend always say "English is a borrowed course" and it is true.

It is not our mother tongue but a professional language that is widely used so it is difficult especially when you didn't start with that.

From my experiences, the language is not static. This is because there are many things we learned earlier and today, we are being told those were wrong.

In order to really have a perfect learning, we have to prepare our minds to learn, unlearn and relearn.

That is exactly what I've determined in my mind to do. It wasn't easy for me at the start but right now, the transformation is evident.

Learn English Language in order to self confidence and boldness wherever you find yourself.
