No more heroes

"I have to get ready," John muttered.
Slowly he got out of bed and opened the curtains. Just like years ago, the sun was shining. It was a day of celebration, one that everyone said they would never forget. People had cheered, sung, welcomed the rescuers with open arms. He himself had met the love of his life and had stayed in the liberated country. They had been happy even though they never had children. With his sweetheart, he had had twenty beautiful years till her heart gave up. Right after a stupid injection like so many others had received. While she was stirring the soup, her heart stopped beating. There she lay motionless on the kitchen floor 30 minutes after the fatal jab.

A short knock on the door before it swung open.
"Good morning John here is your breakfast. Tea or coffee? Gosh, are you dressed yet and wearing your uniform?"
"Today is Remembrance Day. I'll be walking with the group again this year. Can I have a cup of tea with milk, please?"

The sister looked doubtful. She was surprised by the old man's remark .

"John, have a seat," she put his tea in front of him and sat down opposite him. Holding the old gentleman's hand, she said: We have already discussed this, haven't we? I'm sorry John but Liberation Day no longer exists either are the heroes but we can go for a walk if you like.
