Steemit Philippines Photography Contest Week #5 - Filipino Food Photography : Lechon Belly-icious!
Tell me you are a Filipino without telling me you are a Filipino.
Red, crisp skin, crunchy on every bite, super moist meat that melts in the mouth - can you already taste this boneless roasted pork belly? You got to check your senses if this photo doesn't affect your tastebuds because I am salivating right as I am writing this article, I am literally craving this as I type in the descriptions of this Filipino hit. Now let me say this once again:
Tell me you are a Filipino without telling me you are a Filipino.
There's never a celebration without it, well, maybe it's bigger version, the whole lechon. This innovation was clever, much more affordable, and just right for those who are tight on the budget, with all the same experience as the whole, tasting all its distinctive special ingredients of the deboned pork belly in an open fire made of charcoal or scrap wood.
And oh, let's talk about the smell because roasting this would invite your neighbors and even the people in the next barangay. Its aroma can easily fill the room as soon as you take it out from its box container and manila paper.
Decades ago, only the rich can afford to get a whole roasted pig and it has been labeled as a meal for the rich, the ones in the community's upper class but today, it has been food for everyone. Many are looking forward to getting the limited portion of crispy skin so when parties, feasts, and events come, one must be early to get the best part!
The image was taken in Sugbo Mercado in Cebu City, pre-pandemic. Cebu's lechon has been known for its spices and herbs, the very reason many had tagged Cebu as the lechon capital of the country. You won't go wrong getting a few kilos as your pasalubong when visiting Cebu! Even celebrities would pay huge shipping fees to get a box of it, a reason why the Mactan Airport has its own lechon stall ready for those who want to get it just before departure.
Looking at the huge piece of the belly just makes me want to order one right now and I bet you might feel the same way too! It's almost Christmas, perhaps you might be expecting a lechon belly too in your Noche Buena. As for the family, we had made our orders ready as early as today, or you can make this at home too! Make your version, twist it, make your mom proud with your unique recipe!
When was the last time you had a taste of that crispy lechon?
