As Filipinos, we have been taught by our elders to help, and as a child before living near the coastal area, with a grandfather who is a fisherman, I see fishermen go sailing, and fish on a daily basis, morning and even in the afternoon. I learned the art of Bayanihan at an early age as we were encouraged to join the adults in carrying the boats from the shoreline to the water. I was still naive but it felt good to help.

Years after, I learned that this is what Bayanihan is all about. Regardless if we help by extending our monetary resources, our time, or just simply offering our strength, it is considered Bayanihan, a spirit of unity in the community, a team effort.

Back in school, we were given a picture of Filipinos from the rural area carrying a bahay kubo using bamboo pools placed at the bottom of the house and is used for the men to hold and carry the house while transporting it to another area. This was a great picture of the Filipino culture. The image is still fresh in my mind and I bet that can be found on the world wide web too!

In today's age, carrying a house is not anymore to be seen as most houses have been built for permanent purposes. But we can always see other scenes of Bayanihan in various forms, even our technology today had contributed to the new way of helping each other through online cooperation, sending funds via the internet, and more.

As for me, I have seen this still visible in the shorelines where men help each other bring about a fisherman's boat into the sea, the feeling is genuine satisfying that it brings smiles into their faces. I am quite certain that the worker is happy to know there are still young men who continue to extend their support.

I strongly believe that the sense of Bayanihan continues to live today.
