My Favorite Subject In My Student Life | Biology | by @sikan-eyen

My favorite subject during school periods was Biology. I am so drawn to nature and all it offers.

I attended Bright Stars Model Secondary School, in Uyo, Nigeria located within the heart of the city, which is still running successfully till date.

TOPIC: BIOLOGY OF HEREDITARY (GENETICS)

Genetics involves scientifically studying heredity and variation in living things.

While hereditary is the transmission and expression of characters/ traits in organisms from patents down to the offspring. Offspring of an animal, man or plants usually resemble their parents and also resemble one another. This is because the offspring inherit these characters from their parents.

Variation on the other hand, describes the morphological and physiological differences which occurs within a specie with which could be hereditary or acquired from the environment.

For instance, all human beings have human features, but each differs from the other, hence, each person can be recognized.

Differences existing between individuals of the same species is termed 'variation'.

Hereditary Variation:

Hereditary variation refers to differences among individuals which can be passed from parents to their offspring / progeny. Apart from identical twin, no two offspring inherit exactly the same set of characteristics from their parents. Individual offspring both inherits a different combination of traits from both parent. Plants and animals have transmittable character.

Transmittable characters in human beings include:

• Body structure or shape.

• Shape of head, nose and ear.

• Colour of skin, hair, and eye.

• Characters of voice or speech.

• Intelligence.

• Bloodgrouping.

• Human height.

Transmittable characters in plants:

• Height of plant.

• Size or weight of fruit.

• Size of leaf.

• Taste of fruit.

• Food content of fruit

CONCLUSION:

Only characters controlled by genes can be transmitted. Inherited characters are determined by genes. The gene in an organism is inherited during fertilization, it is called genotype and remains constant throughout life. The phenotype which is the physical appearance or features of an organism is determined by its genotype and the environment in which it lives, hence, organism with the sane genotype may possess different phenotype if they live in different environments.

Reasons i love Biology you should know • • •

I love the subject Biology so much. Back then during my school days it was one subject that interest me so much, i always looked forward to Biology classes, what made it better was our Biology teacher then, Miss Jimmy, she was just the best, she was well rooted and passionate about teaching, so we were not lacking at all.

It was not just lecture centered but backed up with adequate practicals, just as it should be.

Little wonder why i went ahead to pursue this subject as s course in the University.
