IN WHAT WAY IS TOO MUCH OF SLEEP A DISEASE?
Too much sleep on regular basis can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and death according to several studies done over the years. Too much of sleep is defined as greater than nine hours for Adults. The most common cause of too much sleeping is not getting enough sleep the night before, or cumulatively during the week. Most at times when we don’t get enough sleep during the hours of the night we use the hours of the day to cover that up ,doing that is not a problem but exceeding the normal sleep pattern becomes the issue.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY IF YOU SLEEP ALL DAY?

We often hear of the health hazards of getting less sleep but on the other had getting too much of the sleep is disastrous. More evidence is showing that spending an excessive amount of time in bed is also linked with health hazards. In some ways, oversleeping itself appears to directly influence certain risk factors, and in other cases, it may be a symptom of other medical conditions. Too much of sleep can be associated with the following health problems;

-Cognitive impairment
-Depression
-Increased inflammation
-Increased pain
-Impaired fertility
-Higher risk of obesity
-Higher risk of diabetes
-Higher risk of heart disease
-Higher risk of stroke
-Higher risk of mortality

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT YOURSELF FROM GETTING TOO MUCH OF SLEEP?

1.Get enough sleep, seven to nine hours a night.
2.Do not oversleep on weekends this throws your circadian rhythms off and makes falling asleep even more difficult when the work week comes along.
3.Expose yourself to bright sunlight upon awakening. Consider leaving the drapes or blinds open at night. The morning sunlight will help you to wake up.
4.Avoid excessive naps especially after 4 PM. These may make it more difficult to fall asleep and result in oversleeping. The same goes for excessive exposure to caffeine and blue light close to bedtime.
5.Avoid going to bed at late hours.

WHAT ARE THE NORMAL HOURS OF SLEEP?

Most adults need 7 to 9 hours, although some people may need as few as 6 hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep each day ,this depends on his/her occupation. Older adults (ages 65 and older) need 7-8 hours of sleep each day. Teenagers would need 8-10hours of sleep. Women in the first 3 months of pregnancy often need several more hours of sleep than usual.
