Are you familiar with the medical condition known as hypertension?

Yes, being a biochemistry student I am well acquainted with hypertension. In this post, I will try to explain hypertension in a simple way, according to the questions asked in the contest. Hypertension is defined as an increase in blood pressure, also known as "high blood pressure." It tends to increase over time, and if not addressed, can lead to heart diseases and strokes.

Normal blood pressure value is 120/80, measured in units called torr or mm Hg (both the same). The top number, 120, is systolic pressure - when the heart pumps. The bottom, 80, is diastolic pressure - when the heart rests between beats.

Hypertension is diagnosed when blood pressure consistently reads over 140/90. We call these people BP patients. Doctors may also order tests to identify the cause. There are a few types: Primary hypertension has no known cause and is most common. Then there is "secondary hypertension" which is caused by some other disease like kidney disease. Apart from primary and secondary hypertension, there are some other types too, like isolated systolic hypertension where only the systolic pressure is high but the diastolic number remains normal.

Do you have knowledge about the symptoms associated with hypertension?

First, it's important to understand that hypertension or “high blood pressure” often does not show any specific symptoms and that's why many people don't even know they have high BP. That's why it's called the "silent killer". However, some people do show pronounced symptoms with it.

As soon as the BP starts rising, it affects the brain causing headaches, dizziness and fainting spells. Due to mental pressure, one sees blackouts or spots floating in front the eyes. Along with it, buzzing sounds start being heard in the ears.

Pain and burning sensation in the abdomen and chest is also one of the symptoms as the liver and kidneys get affected by hypertension. Breathing issues can also happen and one feels like their breath is being restricted. Hypertension negatively impacts both mood and sleep. The person remains irritated and anxious all the time. More tiredness is felt and even simple daily chores become difficult.

If along with these symptoms, more symptoms appear like vomiting, nosebleed, losing consciousness etc. then this is the indication of severe hypertension that needs immediate treatment otherwise risk of heart disease, brain hemorrhage and even death increases.

Is it possible for hypertension to lead to additional health complications?

Yes, hypertension leads to other health complications. The biggest issue is that if high blood pressure is not controlled, it can increase risk of heart disease. Like heart attacks, heart failure, irregular heart beats. Resulting strange heart pains can indicate severe damage.

Along with it the brain is also impacted as its supply arteries are affected too, increasing stroke, paralysis and coma risk. These can often be fatal. Brain damage causes memory loss, depression, etc.

The eyes also suffer due to uncontrolled hypertension. Retinal damage along with blindness afflicts people. Nerve damage starts happening in the eyes leading to gradually declining vision.

The kidneys also get affected and the liver function reduces as well. This leads to digestive issues in the body and mental problems. But out of all the complications, the sad truth is that hypertension reduces life expectancy and lifespan significantly.

In your opinion, can lifestyle modifications contribute effectively to the management of hypertension?

Yes, if you have high BP, by making lifestyle modifications you can manage your BP very effectively. I believe stress is the biggest cause of hypertension. Anyone who learns to manage their stress, their BP improves by itself. That's why regular exercise is very important for hypertension because it helps lower blood pressure. A 30 minute walk daily or any cardio like jogging is very beneficial. Exercise strengthens the heart, arteries and improves their elasticity.

Another big lifestyle change needed is taking care of your diet. Salt, sugar, fats and junk food intake should be very limited. Emphasis should be on vegetables, fruits and fiber & nutrient rich foods. Weight control is also very important as obesity can also cause hypertension.

Following doctor's advice properly is essential - like taking medicines regularly, going for follow ups, getting tests done. Along with it, checking BP at home regularly to know if its in control or not. In my opinion, with these small lifestyle changes, hypertension can be easily managed.
