what is food poisoning?

Food poisoning is a sickness or illness caused as a result of ingesting contaminated food, drinks and other consumables.

Old, young, male or female are liable to suffer from this illness and it is more rampant now than in the days before.

This is because, the growing and preservation of our food supply is mostly done with the use of chemicals. These chemicals, if not properly administered and tested can amount to various disadvantages in the human system upon consumption.

What are the symptoms of food poisoning?

The symptoms of food poisoning are easy to recognise hence it is self-diagnosable. The most prevalent of these symptoms are;

Diarrhoea: This is the frequent excretion of watery faeces as a result of an infirmity or ailment. It is a very common symptom of a wide range of illnesses.

Vomiting:This is another symptom of food poisoning. An infected person tends to throw up due to his/her body system showing resistance to that already consumed food. It can eventually result to a feeling of nausea.

Fever: The body temperature of an individual suffering from food poisoning will tend to rise becoming higher than normal body temperature

Cramps: Another very common symptom is the occurrence of such stomach cramps.

What are the prevention of food poisoning?

Food poisoning can be prevented basically by being cautious of the substances we consume.

Purchasing

When purchasing our food products we should be cautious on the vendors we patronise and also ensure to be very selective when picking food substances.

  • Go for more natural and fresh farm produce. If possible buy directly from the farmers.

  • Avoid package food and also spoilt food substances. These would increase the risk of food poisoning.

Proper Hygiene

This is being extremely hygienic with the substances we consume both in the preparation and consumption processes.

  • We should endeavour to wash our fruits, vegetables and other food substances properly, preferably with salt and clean water.

  • We should keep our cooking equipment including our kitchen clean both before and after cooking.

  • Ensure to only use clean hands on our food and teach this to the little ones.

Handling Food substances

When handling consumables, it is advisable to separate them and administer appropriate attention especially to meat.

  • Meat should be heated at a higher temperature compared to fruits and vegetables in order to kill the microorganisms in it.

  • Our food should be heated properly before consumption to kill the bacterias present in it.

What are the Treatment for food poisoning?

Most food poisoning illnesses are mild and tend to resolve timely even without treatment but for persistent cases;

  • It is advisable to consume enough clear liquids (water) to replace the ones lost as a result of vomiting and diarrhea.
