Hello everyone, good afternoon to you all. In today's edition of Health Dynamics, I will be writing on the topic "Safe drinking water and water borne diseases" The water we drink daily can make or mar us. As individuals, we ought to drink clean water in order to prevent diseases and also live a long healthy life.

What is a safe Drinking Water?

A safe drinking water according to World Health Organization (WHO) is an colourless, odourless and tasteless liquid that is free from contaminants, pathogens, harmful chemical or physical pollutants. It must also have a pH between 6.6 to 8.5.

What is Waterborne Diseases

These are can be defined as diseases that can be contacted from drinking contaminated water. Some of them includes diarrhea, dysentery, cholera e.t.c.

They're various types of water borne diseases, some of them includes:

  • Cholera

it can be contracted from drinking water contaminated by fecal samples, some of it's symptoms includes fatigue, diarrhea, fever.

  • Dysentery

Contracted also from drinking contaminated water. Some of it's symptoms includes stomach pain, cramps, nausea, diarrhea.

  • Typhoid fever

Contracted through drinking contaminated water. Some of the symptoms includes constipation, fever, diarrhea.

  • Norovirus

Some of the symptoms includes vomiting, bloated tummy, fever.

  • Shigella

Some of the symptoms includes, cold shills, bloody stool, stomach discomfort.

Health Effects of drinking contaminated water
  • Water borne diseases

Drinking contaminated water makes us prone to water borne infections.

  • Dehydration

It can equally lead to dehydration.

  • Medical expenses

When we fall sick, we tend to spend a lot for our treatment.

  • Death

Some water borne diseases when not managed properly can lead to death.

  • To prevent waterborne ailment.

Drinking clean water helps to protect us from waterborne borne disease like dysentery, diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, giardiasis e.t.c.

  • Hydration

It also helps all the organs, joints and muscles in the body to function well.

  • Helps the kidney to function properly

It also helps to flush out waste and toxic materials in the body through the kidney.

  • Healthy skin

It also gives a glowing skin.

  • Maintains a healthy Hair and Nails

Hydrating regularly helps to reduce hair and nail breakage.
