How Obesity Affects Our Health!!
Greetings Healthy Steem community. This is a nice topic that I am glad to write about.
Do you consider that obesity is a disease caused by bad eating habits?
Obesity is a condition characterized by excessive body fat. This fat usually comes from what we eat. Hence, I consider obesity a disease caused by bad eating behavior.
We can have some level of fat in our body, but when it becomes too much, it leads to obesity and that's a problem.
Specifically, obesity happens when one eats more fat then they burn. In other words, eating more food rich in fat without properly exercising to burn those fat can predispose one to obesity. Obesity is popularly determined by checking a person's Body Mass Index(BMI). In calculating BMI, the person's weight and height are used. When a person has a BMI of 30 and above, that person is said to be obese.
Obesity has risks and consequences, which is why we really have to watch what we eat and how much we eat.
What negative consequences can obesity bring to our physical and mental health?
Physically, obesity has several consequences. First, obesity is a risk factor for heart disease. People who are obese have a higher chance of developing heart disease.
Next, hypertension usually accompanies obesity. The excess fat fills the arterial space, thereby making the arteries narrow. As a result, the blood pressure in these arteries increases, and hypertension develops. This hypertension can further result in stroke. Due to high blood pressure, a blood vessel supplying the brain could pop, stopping blood supply to that part of the brain. This is called stroke and it is a serious condition.
Obesity also predisposes one to type 2 diabetes.
Those are some of the physical consequences of obesity.
In the mental aspect, obesity causes one's self-esteem to drop. Individuals who are obese most times lose confidence in themselves, and their self-esteem becomes damaged. This is usually as a result of the discrimination and shaming they face because of their body. Some go into depression and/or develop anxiety. Some give up on life and believe they can never do or become something meaningful.
The physical and mental consequences of obesity are severe, which is why obesity should be taken seriously.
What recommendation can you give to people who are obese?
I always say that one can't go wrong with exercise. I would recommend exercise to an obese person. Exercise is the best thing one can do to tackle obesity.
Doing exercise regularly would help burn the excess fat. In addition to that, exercise makes one fit and improves cardiovascular health. Exercise improves heart condition. Exercise also improves endurance. Generally, the health benefits of exercise cannot be overemphasized. Different intensities of exercise can be prescribed depending on the condition of the individual.
Another thing I would recommend is lifestyle modifications. I would advise an obese individual to regulate their eating habits. I would also advise individuals to avoid living a sedentary life. Living a sedentary lifestyle is associated with a greater tendency to be obese.
If you were obese, would you agree to have invasive surgeries or would you simply diet and exercise?
If I were obese, I would definitely opt for exercise and diet rather than go for invasive surgery. The risks and complications that could result from an invasive surgery make it a non-viable option for me.
I would rather exercise and reap all the extra benefits of exercising, as well as watching my diet.
Conclusion
Obesity is becoming rampant these days. Even children are becoming obese. Obesity is like a window to a lot of complications health wise, which is why we have to take it seriously and do what we can to treat or prevent it.
