Do you know how much sugar you consume per day?

It seems impossible to live without sugar because, in the modern world, sugar is the most craved of food. No one can accurately get how much sugar they consume per day.

Over here in Nigeria, almost all the food we consume per day has not less than 45- 65 percent sugar quantity in it. 70% of foods consume here are carbohydrate based and carbohydrates are sugar. Most people, after the surgery foods, go ahead to drink alcohol without so much idea of the sugar level in it.

For example, I can take tea with bread in the morning as breakfast, then for lunch I take starch (garri or fufu) with soup and for dinner, I take rice with stew. Now would you say I have taken a balanced diet with less sugar or more?

Just very few check what they eat in today's world. Everyone is mostly concerned about what will sustain hunger and nothing more. If we can check what we consume per day, I think we can help save our lives. But currently, when we think of how much it will cost us to prepare vegetable soup or sauce, or plantain, we will rather go for quick and cheaper foods.

Since my health is important to me and I wish to stay healthy, most times it occurs to me that I have been taking in surgery foods for the past weeks, then I will have to advise myself on what I eat the next week. Sugar is almost unavoidable but can be limited.

Do you have a family member who has problems with diabetes?

20230802_160139_0000.png

Yes, I do. My mom and her siblings are diabetic patients and I guess you know what it means to have a diabetic patient at home. There's type 1 because it was inherited. I wonder why their parents should pass that unto their children. But I guess they never knew until they were of age, because my mom discovered she has it when she lost her sister to diabetes.

Taking care of my mom cost a fortune. From her drugs, to what she eats, and her regular check-up, costs a lot. She doesn't eat regular food so after buying food for the house, I buy hers separately and their food is more expensive than the regular food.

Although I don't stay in the same town as her I make sure someone gets her drugs through to her. At times I ask if my mom would continue to live on drugs. Is it that diabetic patients have their whole lives lived on drugs? Strips get higher in price every single day and their drugs too.

At times I wished I never knew anyone with such sickness because it is very dangerous. At times after her check-up, she will be told her sugar level is low, and she needs to take a bottle of coke to boost it, so you see, this disease is really dangerous. If it's high, it's a hazard, and if it's low, it's a problem.

Have you had a problem with sugar?

No, and I don't think 🤔 I can ever have a sugar problem. Though my mom was hereditary but she never passed it to her children. I mind what I eat to avoid type 2 diabetes.

Just like I said earlier, I mind what I eat because my health is important, since everything we consume is sugar based, I try as much as I can to take more veggies.

What do you think about sugar as the worst enemy?

Consume less sugar! Sugar may be sweet, but it is also deadly.

I can say that sugar is everyone's best friend when we consume it through food but becomes someone's enemy when they have diabetes.

Sugar has no nutritional value which is why it is often referred to as "empty calories." As we consume sugar daily, our body's system converts it into glucose which results in energy. But having excess sugar can result in fat because the body was not able to process all the sugar hence leading to far.

You know in most foods that we consume, there is hidden sugar but we might not take notice of it. Sugar can be found in most packaged and processed food like cereals, pasta, noodles, and salads. Often time, we take sugar also through drinks, thinking because the drink has a bitter taste, it doesn't contain sugar.

I repeat, consume less sugar, and save your health a great deal.
