Contest: Breaking Bad Habits
When we repeatedly do anything, our mind learns it in a very deep way. And after a while, we can do things without properly thinking about it. This automatization of repeated patterns can be referred to as a Habit.
Habits may be good or bad ones, but both have deep roots in our psychology. In the case of good habits, this is very good news, but for bad habits, it is a disaster.
What are some bad habits that are hard to stop, and why is it tough to quit them?
In my society there is a long list of bad habits. Prolonged screen time is the worst one and frequently observed in all ages. Others are procrastinating, people-pleasing, bad sleeping patterns, unhealthy food intake, smoking, drinking etc.
It is difficult to get rid of because the amount of dopamine which we get through these habits can't allow anyone to let it go. So it is really tough to give up happiness.
Another reason is our comfort zone persistence. Nobody wants to bother himself for the pain to abolish a bad habit.
How can we tell if a habit is just a habit or if it's more like an addiction? And what can we do to break them?
For me, addiction is a pro level of a habit. Mostly habits remain at a moderate level, usually harmless. But what is said " a kick " via a bad habit mostly requires an upgrade.
Because the human mind becomes used to the same amount. It demands more and more. This certainly leads to addiction. The solution is when you feel that you are too much in any habit, just quit it. Without any further thinking.
What are some challenges that people might face when trying to quit bad habits, and how can they overcome them?
People face mostly lack of power to oppose their bad habits. One needs a fully planned motivational system to overcome the obstacle for a firm determination. The next is procrastination or to delay the "start "to the next day. I found it difficult whenever I thought a lot about a thing to start. Here in the case of bad habits, it is harder due to a so-called pleasure, or society approval attach to it.
How can we support and encourage others to quit their bad habits without being judgmental or pushy?
Society has a general behavior of being critical of anyone with any bad habit. Being human, we should accept the fact that anybody can be subjected to such things.
This is the first step of behavioral change to support a person for quitting his/her bad habits. Further, in today's world, the internet can provide the best possible road map in most cases. So if you want to help loved ones in calling off a bad habit, research is essential.
