Contest: Does radioactivity cause death?
Radioactivity
"...An unstable nucleus will decompose spontaneously, or decay, into a more stable configuration but will do so only in a few specific ways by emitting certain particles or certain forms of electromagnetic energy" Britannica
Radioactivity are the processes that occur when an unstable material continuously gives away invisible energy untill it becomes stable.
They are like hyperactive children which after being feed, will engage themselves in any unnecessary activity until all the energy from the food is dissipated then they can rest.
When the world bacteria is mentioned, the first thing that comes into our mind is food poisoning and some kind of disease. They are always associated with the negative stuff.
Radioactivity often get the same treatment that bacteria gets. Radioactivity like bacteria has a lot of positive uses but we often only hear of their negative sides.
When properly managed radioactivity produces a very clean source of electricity in nuclear power stations.
In the field of medicine, doctors make use of his special type of radioactive isotope to see inside the patient's body and even treat some types of cancer.
With the use of radioactive isotopes from carbon, archaeologist can tell how old things are and the ionizing radiation in smoke detectors helps prevent lots of fire disasters at homes.
Radioactivity and radiation is not just the cold killer as always described, but it is like a double edged sword.
Radiation is not as dangerous as it's ignorance. Having very little or no knowledge of radiation is often the cause of most radiation related problems.
Avoid exposure
Prolong exposure to high levels of radiation can cause certain forms of cancer.
Among the different forms of energy given off during radiation, it is the alpha and gamma rays that are very harmful to humans, able to damage cells and DNA.
Precisely 38 years in 1986, I would have made sure nobody conducts a blind experiment in the facility.
I would have put in place layers of failsafe, making safety a priority and improving communication amongst the workers and engineer.
Training the manpower to an adequate level is an option I would explore. And finally, knowing what I know now about that day, I will simply closedown the reactor for routine maintenance and reject the test experiment.
Home appliances
We get some dose of radiation from electronic equipments and appliances at home like television and cell phones. Though they are often said to be safe at low levels.
Medical procedures
We get large amount of radiation when exposed to medical procedures like X-ray, CT-scans and some type of cancer treatments
Natural sources
We get some quantity of radiation from the sun, from rocks, and from some minerals in the soil. Examples are elements like potassiu- 40 and radon
Being invisible, colorless, odorless and tasteless, it is very difficult to detect radiation without the use of special equipment like the Geiger's counter that can tell the amount of radiation in it's surrounding.
Scintillation detectors use a chemical that glow when hit by radiation.

Yes radioactivities dangerous but it is our ignorance that kills us more. A lack of knowledge could lead to poor handling or excessive exposure to harmful radiation.
I am inviting @bela90, @jozzie90 and @mesola to use this opportunity to learn more about radioactivity, it's uses and danger by participating in this contest.

hola amiga!
Saludos amiga
Dios te bendiga
