Ancient medicine is the combination of many plants to produce medicine for the treatment of illness and diseases which has been in existence before the introduction of Western medicine.

In Nigeria, many plants can be used for the preparation of ancient medicine for the treatment of many illnesses and diseases. Most of the plants are not only used for the treatment of diseases in Nigeria, but they have some spiritual significance which there are symbolic.

In Nigeria, seeds, twigs, and leaves are seen as a magical property especially if they are black or red. In Nigeria, the method of performing ancient medicine varies according to the culture and place you are coming from. In some parts of Nigeria, plant material may be fresh plants or dry plants. However, the different methods of performing ancient medicine in Nigeria are:
Extraction
Infusion; This involves preparing ancient medicine using hot or cold water and adding honey to the medicine.
Decoctions; Is a method that involves boiling woody pieces for some time and filtering the water out before adding other plants.

Before the introduction of Western medicine in Africa as a whole ancient medicine was what people were using to treat themselves for illness and diseases. In Nigeria, it is called herbal medicine, which is the common name that everyone knows in ancient medicine.
Ancient medicine in Nigeria is still relevant despite the existence of Western medicine 💊💊 that we have in the country. However, it is still not everyone in Nigeria believes in the intake of traditional medicine because it is not properly prepared or researched and lacks collaboration and government support.

Many plants are used for ancient medicine and below are the descriptions of some of the plants.
Stems leaves, and flowers of different plants are also elements of medicinal.
Seeds and fruits which contain phytochemicals are also elements of ancient medicine.
Roots The roots of some trees in Nigeria are elements used for ancient medicine.
Bark which I ms the outer layer of a tree stem is also an element of ancient medicine.

There are many arguments surrounding ancient medicine as we have Western medicine. Some people believe ancient medicine doesn't work, whereas some believe and trust traditional medicine. Most people don't take traditional medicine because of the bitterness and the way it is prepared.
Nigerians love anything foreign coming from the Western world than what is locally prepared. Traditional medicine is becoming more attractive in Nigeria, because of how people are becoming afraid of taking expired or fake western medicine and the cost of western.
