Cervicogenic headache

Cervicogenic headache is a kind of secondary headache that arises in the cervical region or we can say that in the neck region. The cervicogenic headache results from the issues in the structures present in the neck region.This pain of headache radiates from the region of neck to the head and it is often one sided headache.
Symptoms
The symptoms of the cervicogenic headache can be clear. The individuals experience the pain of the cervicogenic headache that can be localised to head on the one side and it usually begins at the base of the skull and it is also radiating pain which radiates to the forehead or back side of the eyes.
The cervicogenic headache pain is dull and aching.some people experience stiffness in the neck region and limited range of motion. The pain can get worse with the poor posture or due to repeated movements of teg neck.
There are also associated symptoms like nausea, vomiting and some individuals have sensitivity to light or loud sounds.
Causes
With the increasing age the people have issues with the degeneration of the structures of their body. With the increasing age the intervertebral discs present in the cervical spine begans to degenerate and then it causes pain in the cervical spine and can rediate to the head.
The age is a major factor which can cause cervicogenic headache. The age related wear and tear can cause bony spurs and they can cause damage to the nerves and ultimately leading to head in the cervical region.
The traumatic injuries also can cause this pain in the cervical region like whiplash injuries.The poor posture can cause this problem like working at a computer or using mobile phone for a long period of time in a bad posture and these poor postures can cause damage to the muscles of the neck.
Some conditions can cause stress to the nerves in the cervical region and ultimately can cause headache.
Treatment
We can diagnose a cervicogenic headache on the basis of a medical history and also through physical examination. X - rays, CT scans also recommended to confirm the diagnosis and what is the cause of the diagnosis.
In the physical therapy treatment for the cervicogenic headache an exercise program is developed which is helpful to improve the movement of teg neck and also increase the strength and insurance of the neck muscles.Some techniques are also used and hot or ice pack like modalities are also used to reduce stiffness and swelling.
Some medicines are used to relieve pain like NSAIDS and they are also helpful to reduce inflammation.The massage therapy is done to reduce muscle tension in the neck region.
In case of any nerve blockage the corticosteroid injections are recommended to reduce pain.Lifestyle modification is very important step to improve health conditions. Adopting good habits like regular exercise, maintaining good posture can be helpful to stay healthy.
After the failure of conservative treatment, physical therapy treatment and when the medications fail to treat the condition the last option is the surgery.
