What is the first step to prevent infection when caring for a wound?

Sometimes we have to learn and master minor medical procedures such as treating wounds because we never know when and where we will get a wound. With the knowledge to treat wounds, we can immediately treat the wounds we receive so they don't become infected.

The following are steps to prevent infection in the wounds we treat:

  • Make sure our hands are clean before we clean the wound.

  • Stops bleeding in wounds

  • Clean the wound using the right antiseptic

  • Choose the right bandage and change the bandage regularly.

How do you properly clean a wound before applying medicine or a bandage?

According to the medical knowledge that I have studied, the correct way to clean a wound is as follows:

Clean the wound with clean running water for 5-10 minutes, then make sure that there is no dirt left on the wound, this form of treatment will eliminate microorganisms that can cause infection. After that, clean the wound and surrounding areas using a clean cloth or towel.

Why is it important to keep wounds moist in the early stages of healing?

In the past, before I understood how to care for wounds properly, I always kept the wounds I suffered dry. It turns out that keeping wounds moist in the early stages of healing is very good.

What makes keeping wounds moist in the early stages of healing so important is that a moist environment can reduce the formation of scar tissue, and can save time and energy.

Therefore, in a moist wound environment, wounds can heal more quickly because a moist environment is also important for cell function in the body.

What are the signs of possible wound infection, and what should you do if you suspect it?

There are 4 signs that the wound may have started to become infected:

  1. The wound is getting redder and feels hot
  2. The wound is getting more swollen and painful
  3. Drainage or pus comes out of the wound
  4. People who have wounds will feel high fever

If the four signs above have begun to be experienced by the injured person, then what must be done to prevent infection is:

  • Immediately clean the wound using running water and use soap to remove germs that cause infection.

  • Keep the wound dry so that bacteria do not multiply easily.

  • Cover the wound with a sterile bandage, and immediately change the bandage if the bandage becomes wet and dirty.

  • And the most important thing is to avoid picking and scratching the wound.

How do you know whether a wound can be treated at home or requires medical attention?

The way to know that a wound you have suffered needs to be treated by a doctor is if the wound is deep enough to show fat or muscle, is gaping, and the bleeding does not stop for 10 minutes.

If the wound is like the one above, then immediately go to the doctor to get further treatment, but if the wound is not as serious as the characteristics above, such as a minor cut, then it can be treated at home using the effective methods that I have shared above.

This is my entry for the Treating Our Wounds contest, I also want to invite @sailawana, @abialfatih and @dekki to participate together in this contest.
