What is Typhoid?
Typhoid fever is a infection disease. It is caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi. This bacteria is spread in areas with poor sanitation, such as through contaminated food and water. It can be a mild illness or can be serious and even fatal.
Pathogenesis
This bacteria is transmitted by consuming food and water contaminated with feces. Symptoms appear 1-3 weeks after the bacteria enter the body. The bacteria damage the digestive system and also grow in the bloodstream. The bacteria are released back into the environment when a patient defecates. If the stool of a typhoid patient are not disposed of properly, it can contaminate food and water.
🤒Symptoms and Signs
- High fever
- dry cough
- Body ache, malaise
- Abdominal pain
- Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting
- Headache
- Constipation or diarrhea
Typhoid fever is a serious disease for children and the elderly.
Complications
- In severe cases, internal bleeding may occur due to intestinal perforation.
- The patient has an enlarged spleen.
- Myocarditis
- When typhoid fever is severe, it can even cause death.
Some people do not show symptoms but continue to carry the bacteria in their bodies. These are carriers.
If you suspect that you have typhoid fever, it is best to seek treatment from a qualified doctor or hospital.
How does Typhoid affect our lives?
When we get sick, it becomes difficult to carry out our daily activities. It affects not only the sick person but also the family members living with us. Our illness can also affect the workplace. If we have to be hospitalized, the impact is even greater. Therefore, we should take steps to protect ourselves from diseases before they occur. That is, we should instill good health habits in ourselves as well as in society.
💉Prevention
- By washing hands with soap (especially before preparing food, eating, and after using the toilet)
- Drinking boiled water.
- Cooked food should be protected from flies.
- Eat fresh food after washing it thoroughly with clean water.
- Always use a toilet to defecate. Put small children's feces in the toilet.
- Get vaccinated against typhoid fever before traveling to areas where typhoid fever is prevalent.
Finally, I would like to invite @dilesha, @nishadi89 @m-fdo to share their thoughts on handwashing.
