I think BMI which means Body Mass Index is a mathematical ratio that combines the patient weight with height to give the body fatness level. The fact that Australia has a growing obesity problem made body mass index an attractive tool because it gives an instant answer as to whether a person is in the healthy weight range or not, and alerts the person on the potential health risk factors which may come with being underweight, or overweight, or obese.

Althrough it cannot be considered a perfect indicator and does not consider variables such as the muscular or fat content, BMI is quite helpful in defining which subjects are at risk of developing health disorders linked to weight, for example cardiovascular disease, diabetes or hypertension.

How can knowing your BMI help you understand your overall health?

A person’s weight relative to his or her height is called Body Mass Index (BMI), which classifies a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. An understanding of BMI is not bad since it offers a glimpse of the level of fat people, especially when it is taken with other parameters to keep track of health. Hence, by determining their BMI, one can be aware of more prone conditions that are related to being underweight or overweight including heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

It acts as an initial check up framework to check for any sign of diseases in relation to obesity and this will ensure that life altering measures or medical treatment is called for to ensure that the ideal body weight needed for a sound health is achieved hence increasing the wellbeing of people.

Do you think BMI is the best indicator of a person's health status? Why or why not?

In particular, BMI is a way useful to classify weight status for populations, but it has its flaws when it comes to an individual approach. Muscle mass and bones, distribution of fat, these factors are missed, which makes it rather imprecise for athletes, or people with increased muscles mass. Diet, physical activity, genetic predisposition, and other aspects also contribute to the health status. In combination with BMI, such values as the waist size, body composition, and blood tests are more effective to assess one’s condition.

What are some ways you can improve your BMI if it's not in the healthy range?

In the event that you are not within that healthy BMI, here are ways that can help you achieve it. First and foremost, ensure that individual incorporates the right food choice in his/her diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean source of protein and whole grain products without side orders of processed products or sugars. It is also important that you have an exercise regime that will assist in enhancing your BMI – cardio exercise, weight training, and stretching. Also, having proper 4-6 hours of quality sleep at night helps in the management of body weight.

Drinking lots of water, regulating stress and tension, and possibly taking advice from a physician or a licensed dietician to plan for the achievement of a satisfactory BMI can all be recommended. Please bear in mind that gradual change is highly effective in the long run as far as increasing your BMI and/or general health status is concerned.
