ILLNESSES AND DISEASES THAT COMES WITH THE RAINY SEASON

The Rainy season is that time of the year where the Earth comes alive with the smell of damp earth, droplets of rain and that beautiful sight of lush green landscape scenery. This season is also referred to as the only fertile breeding period for harmful microorganisms which are the causative agents of illnesses during the rainy season. In rural areas, parents are faced with the challenges of combating diseases during this time.

Mention the types of illnesses and diseases

In Nigeria, the rainy season has its health related effects. The illnesses, during this period are mostly related to the respiratory system, food and water borne diseases.... They are caused by the fluctuation in temperature and inhabitation of microorganisms. And also viruses are likely to spread easily then. Common diseases/illnesses found in the rainy season are:-

1. Malaria:- This is the most common diseases during monsoon season in Nigeria and likely any place around the world. It caused by the mosquito parasite which are welcomed by the presence of stagnant waters. It is one of the deadly illnsses that occurs during this season
2. Cold and flu:- Main caused by the fluctuation in temperature and response of one's body to the rainy weather.
3. Cholera:- A water borne disease. Usually causing severe diarrhea.
4. Typhoid fever
5. Pneumonia
6. Asthma

How do you treat this illnesses and diseases?

The general treatments for all these diseases are eating immune boosting foods, taking drugs(depending on the illnesses) in consultation with your doctor or physician. While some can have no specific treatment rather plenty of fluid and rest will do!.

In some part of Nigeria, some people treats such illnesses with natural and herbal medicine which seems to work. Our parents were also using herbal medicine to treat us while growing up.

Oh yes I have experienced it severally. But I'll just promptly talk about one encounter.

It all happened when I went to my hometown for a-2 week vacation few years ago. With the presence of pipe borne water, there were likely low chances to have waterborne illness. I slept without mosquito nets, not even remembering to spray insecticides and obviously leaving my skin for mosquitoes to gladly feed on because there were stagnant waters around.

Unfortunately, on the 8th day of my visit, I was down with fever, chill and sweating profusely which were eventually the symptoms of malaria. I was offered herbal remedy, but I bluntly refused. I quickly visited a close medicine store to make complains and receive medications. I was given anti-malaria drugs, amoxicillin tablets and paracetamol. Injections were administered for five days straight. And with help of the treatment, I was able to get well as soon as possible.

Conclusion

The rainy is a blessed season where farmers get to push on the agricultural activities the more for production of food. Likewise common illnesses are as well features of the monsoon season. Try to take precautionary measures to stay safe by keeping your environment clean and visit the health center when you notice any symptoms of these diseases found in the rainy season. Remember some are deadly.....
