Mental health is a topic that most people in our society choose to refrain from. It includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being and can literally affect the lives of individuals and the society at large. This topic however is not adhered to mostly because of the fact that some perceive anyone who focuses on it as a weak individual. However, the reverse is the case as it is a subject that must be touched and addressed for everyone who walks on the Earth.

What daily habits enhance mental resilience?

A person's mind could very well determine how that person acts and lives. It defines his character and his personality and can very well show how strong he/she is. Strength in this context isn't referring to physical strength but rather to that of the mind. We are talking about "mental resilience" which is how well a person can cope with difficult situations, hardships or stress. For instance, a boy being bullied in school. The reaction of this child could very well affect his future. How so?, you might ask. If this boy is able to go past the trauma that comes with it and focuses instead on all he can achieve despite what he's been through, it will build a strong mind out of him which in turn will help him tackle other problems in the future, thus making him resilient. On the other hand, having a break-down due to insecurities that could arise from the bullying could make this child grow up with a hateful spirit and may stop him from socializing with other people. This could be a very serious problem as humans are social beings and need each to grow and progress. In essence, having mental resilience reduces redundancy and increases growth.

How does diet influence mental health?

Resilience as discussed earlier is a way of being strong mentally to help one to be mentally healthy. A person's mental health could very much be affected depending on the situation they find themselves in. One of which is diet.

Diet can significantly impact mental health. Certain nutrients, like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, play crucial roles in brain function and mood regulation. Simply put, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can support optimal mental health. Conversely, diets high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats may increase the risk of mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

Additionally, maintaining stable blood sugar levels through a balanced diet can help regulate mood and energy levels. Thus, what a person puts in his body can affect his/her mood and outlook on life as a whole. A person who eats good food will be strong both physically and mentally and as such, junk food should be abstained from.

What activities promote emotional balance?

So far, we've discussed how being mentally resilient can help someone and how eating good food can play a vital role. Now, let's talk about something that goes hand in hand with the mind - Emotions. A person who is frustrated can't perform day to day activities in a firm manner and doesn't have a strong grip on reality which is very problematic. Having just the right balance of one's emotions can go a long way in ensuring sustainability in a person's life. Someone can achieve this with relaxation as it aims to reduce stress and in the long run, increase mindfulness, and emotional well being. Another way to ensure emotional balance is through exercise as this can make the body and mind fit to carry out activities.

Now, all these things must be done always and as a daily routine. The saying "practice makes perfect" helps us to see that doing a particular thing over and over again will make someone achieve a certain level of ingenuity in whatever was done. In the same way, practicing healthy mental living will help you and I to achieve a level of happiness, emotional stability, mental resilience and most importantly have a good mental health.
