(The photo was edited using the photoleap app)
I hope you are safe and healthy. So today I thought of coming to you with a very beautiful post.
So guys, today I am talking about The Power Of The Pepper.
Actually pepper is an essential spice nowadays. Pepper is also known as the king among spices.
Pepper is a crop of high commercial value. Therefore, at one time the pepper crop was also known as 'black gold'. The homeland of this valuable crop was India.
Pepper has been used in our country since ancient times. Also, in the distant past, pepper was used as a currency in this country due to its high commercial value. It is also mentioned in the old book that the ancients had given pepper instead of money for dowry. Furthermore, it is stated in the book The Portuguese Age of Sri Lanka written by Sir Paul Peiris that cinnamon was packed with cinnamon in order to prevent the destruction of the cinnamon ships that were sent from our country to foreign countries.
So our house also has 2 pepper vines. But the pepper crop does not withstand all climates. It has the most favorable climatic conditions. Land areas located at a height of 800 meters above sea level are ideal for pepper cultivation. Also, a temperature range between 20-30 degrees Celsius is more suitable. But the basic temperature range suitable for this cultivation is between 15-35 degrees Celsius.
There should be an annual rainfall of more than 1750 mm. If there is no facility for additional irrigation, areas with prolonged drought should not be used for pepper cultivation. There should be a clear dry period and adequate rainfall to stimulate flowering and pollination.
Apart from this, pepper is mainly cultivated in Sri Lanka in the lowland and midland wet and intermediate agro-climatic zones. Accordingly, the districts of Kurunegala, Matale, Kandy, Kegalle, Badulla, Ratnapura, Monaragala can be mentioned as the main pepper growing districts. Pepper can be grown as an intercrop with coconut. Therefore, pepper is often grown as a side crop in coconut plantations. Also, pepper cultivation is done in more than 42000 hectares of land.
Many types of local peppers have been found in Sri Lanka since ancient times. But in the 70s, the Indian variety of pepper called Paneor-1 and the Malaysian variety of pepper called Kuchin were introduced to Sri Lanka. Although local pepper varieties are of high quality, it is quite difficult to find their plants. Therefore, the most common pepper plants grown in our country are Panyur-1 and Kuchin varieties.
Benefits
Various products are made from the pepper crop. Also, many benefits are obtained from the pepper crop. The following is about it.
Black pepper is produced by drying the whole fruit.
White pepper is produced by removing the outer capsicum, which is also available in sliced and ground forms.
A small quantity of green and ripe pepper is used for salt pickling, and dehydrated green pepper and preserved ripe pepper are also used commercially.
