There are dogs who live for winter: when cold and snow come, their time has come. But others, especially the smaller and more delicate ones, go into winter mode and neither want to go out nor play. There is no way your dog will want to go out and exercise when you can see your breath in the air. But there are plenty of indoor activities you can do to save your dog from boredom during the cold winter months, and you don't even have to put on your boots.

January can also be your dog training month and is a great opportunity to spend most of your time indoors learning something new with your dog. The challenges you'll come up with help with mental and physical stimulation, and the workouts can burn off a lot of pent-up energy. Entertaining your dog can be a challenge.

But, as is well known - a bored dog is not a good dog.
Bored dogs really do go into total bankruptcy. We are the main source of communication and some kind of entertainment for them, so if we don't give them to them, they will come up with their own activities - and then, in the end, we have chewed shoes, remotes and ...whatever.

By playing with your dog several times a day, you can reduce the likelihood that they will develop destructive habits such as excessive barking or chewing.

Even taking the time to brush up on basic commands will help in this endeavor, and learning commands will strengthen your overall relationship.

Does your pup hate going outside in the cold winter weather? Do you have your own ways and established indoor activities that you like to do with your dog? Do you need ideas? Here are a few we've picked for you.

  • Small ball game. Before the game starts, you need to consider some things: how big is your dog, do you have breakable objects around, is the floor slippery? It is good to have a carpet. Otherwise, when it gets wild, it will slide around and bump into walls and furniture. This game is best for small dogs.
  • A game of hide and seek. There are many ways to play hide and seek with your dog. Once the dog understands the rules, it can be a challenging and fun game for both of you. Using a treat or a favorite toy is helpful. Show your dog the reward, initially place it in a visible place, then take him to another room. After a while, let him go and direct him to the toy until he understands the game and what is wanted in this case. Then you can already hide it more seriously.
  • Obstacle course. Using pillows, couches, beds, or whatever you have around the house, you can make a fun obstacle course for your pup. Placing treats or prizes around the course will encourage him to jump and climb. Some are happy to crawl through makeshift tunnels, as long as these obstacles always lead to a reward in the end. Thus, the dog feels a sense of accomplishment. This will stimulate your puppy both mentally and physically.

Teach your dog the command “Go to bed!” Does your dog know this command? This trick is easy to teach and comes in handy when you're making dinner or having guests over. Train tirelessly every time you enter the kitchen. It will become a habit eventually. It is healthy.
If your dog is generally inclined to follow you wherever you go around the house, this task will not be a problem or exercise for him. If he doesn't and lacks motivation, then you can try holding a treat or toy in hand. Just walk around the house. Let all his attention be on the movement and the thing he will get at the end. And going up and down stairs can be a workout for both of you!

We provide them with everything - a warm bed, attention and food. Free of charge. But they love working together with us. So working for food is not bad or unusual - it is normal and mentally stimulating for them. You can make your dog perform some tricks before he gets his dinner.
Does your dog know all the basic obedience commands? Does he always respond to a stay and place command? Even well-trained dogs need a refresher course every now and then to keep them in shape. All dogs should have a reliable response to sit, stay, drop and come here commands. A few quick training sessions (5-10 minutes) each day are a great way to help your dog master the basics and will help keep your dog mentally stimulated.

Be creative and come up with some unique games of your own to share with your dog. This can be your special time to bring your small team together. Soon the warm weather will be back and you'll be having more fun outside with your four-legged friends, until then, share your methods for passing the cold days.
