I’m excited to participate in the contest organized by @suboohi titled "Heartburn: cause and prevention While heartburn is a relatively well understood condition and is quite common, it can certainly be an uncomfortable experience for many of us. I will be illustrating what heartburn is in this piece in addition to pointing out the relevant preventions to apply so as not to experience it.

Heartburn therefore is described as a burning pain in the chest region just below the sternum that passes after taking a meal. It is a condition whereby stomach acids flow back into the esophagus thus causing an inflammation. As for me, yes, heartburn might be rather painful, and it can also turn into an unpleasant interference with the usual life functioning in case of its frequent occurrence. It is a stark admission that the digestive system is aligned to the delicacies we take and how we take them. This is the reason why it is crucial to know its causes to be able to avoid the discomfort it may bring.

As for me, I think that the main factors that can lead to heartburn are associated with our way of life and, in particular, the diet that we follow. Some of the known factors that precipitate this are taking foods that rank high on the spiciness, fat content or the level of acidity they display, as these are known to inflame the stomach lining, and cause the acids to flow up into the esophagus. Even overeating or eating quickly may add to this: a full stomach exerts pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, making it easier for an acid to enter. Other bad habits such as stretching or lying down immediately after a meal, smoking, or taking alcohol also reduce the tone of the sphincter and hence leads to increased incidences of heartburn. Personal triggers include stress and certain medications that can worsen the condition and so they should be avoided.

To my mind, the issue of heartburn prevention is primarily about being aware of certain aspects of life. Organized methods that might be proved useful include dietary changes, especially the non-consumption of foods that are likely to aggravate symptoms such as spicy foods, foods that are rich in fats and oils, and acidic foods. A good example of how to lessen the pressure on stomach is by taking many meals a day but little portions. It is also unadvisable to sleep soon after taking a meal, it is advisable to wait for about 2-3 hours to avoid contracting acid reflux. Staying at a proper weight because weight can add pressure on the abdomen, wearing loose clothes at the waist is also an advisable thing to do. Also, smoking cessation and moderation in the use of alcoholic beverages are also important stagers in avoiding heartburn. Some reasons that cause heartburn are therefore simple to deal with, such as chewing foods more slowly and thoroughly.
