INTRODUCTION

"Bernard, it seems your sickness is getting worser day by day despite the medications, tomorrow we'll be going to the hospital for proper treatment, have you heard me?" My father said this to me when i was 15 years old. I frowned my face and did everything possible not to branch that building called hospital.

I fear and hate hospital with passion, because any small thing you'll be sleeping over on their bed which i hate the most. @sahmie my humble moderator, thank you for organising this true life contest. I begin with my entry 👇

Have you ever been scared of going to the hospital? What made you feel that way?

Yes , i can still remember when i had malaria and typhoid and my parents insisted i should go to the hospital for medical check up and get the prescribed drugs so that i'll get better. I fear visiting the hospital because of the bad news i do hear from people that were there before. Because of the fear, i gathered some leaves to porch and all thanks to Almighty God, the malaria and typhoid was gone without visiting the hospital.

Can you think of any common things that might make people afraid of hospitals?

Death

Most people are scared or afraid of hospital because they think they might die when trying to get treatment from the doctor, especially if they're to go for surgery.

Medical equipment

People that haven't visited the hospital before are use to taking paracetamol when they have headache and taking Amatem when they have malaria or typhoid. A big fear will come in if they're not familiar with the medical equipment or medications.

Unexpected sickness

People are also afraid of hospital because of the unknown and big grammar sickness. You may be feeling uncomfortable and dizzy so you decided to visit the doctor for help, they'll come up with with the test results that you're suffering from a deadly disease that will require operation. I'm sure you'll be scared, so that's also another reasons people are afraid of hospital.

What parts of the hospital environment do you find intimidating or scary?

Surgery theater

I've never been there before, but i know what my mother passed through inside there when she was on surgery. To show how that environment is intimidating, any patient who's going in there for operation do pray and hug his or her loved once before closing the door, that's the same thing my mother did.

It was so scary because i didn't hear from my mother since she entered there for surgery. I thank God the giver of life, the operation was a successful one and i have my beloved mother back on her fit. Right from that day, i mark that place as danger zone.

How do you think doctors and nurses can help make patients feel less scared?

Words like, "Don't worry the operation or medications will be effective and successful, nothing will happen to you" is a very effective peel that can help patients feel less scared. Instead of these, most doctors and nurses do say "well, it's a 50 50 deal, you may survive and you may lose your life, the ball is at your cord". This is the worse thing to say to a patient, hearing this the patient may even die before getting the medications or being operated.

Do you have any ideas on how someone can overcome their fears of the hospital?

Think positively

When you have that positive mindset about the treatment you'll receive when you visit the hospital, it'll be easy to overcome fears. Most people think negatively and this has a bad effect on them.

Communication

You can express your fears in words to your relatives or love ones, they might be of help probably someone who was in your same shoes. You can also talk to a therapist about such fears and you'll be guided on how to overcome.

CONCLUSION

Hospital is not a happy building to visit talkless of spending days or months there that's why you see most individuals take herbal and native treatment to prevent them from having disease or sickness that'll lead to hospital. We'll should do everything possible to drive out hospital fear by thinking positively. Do we have doctors and nurses in the community? Please play your role well so as to help patients overcome this fears.
