Cure for Depression and Anger
Editor: canva
How would you help a person who is struggling with depression or anger?
I had a classmate who had the worst anger I've ever seen. He would slap people at the slightest provocation, yell over trivial things, snap at will and even destroy important things when the “spirit” falls on him. One time he pushed a teacher down for chastising him and that was the last time we met him in school.
So why did I share this?
Depression and anger are both negative emotions that affect the human mind. Many people are victims of these psychological issues. It could be frustrating to see your colleague at work, a family member or even yourself consumed by any of them. When not properly handled or treated, these emotions could escalate into something worse. So what are the proactive steps to take?
👉What must I do to conquer depression and anger?
There are four steps I can suggest.
- Describe: It involves understanding what truly distinguishes these psychological states from the other. In the boy's case, the problem was poor anger management. He lacked this basic skill.
- Explain: Answer questions like “Why do I react the way I do?” It helps explain the reason for feeling either depressed or angry. We discovered that the boy in question behaved that way because of the environment he found himself in. He grew up in a home where adults fight with knives and belts and this affected him greatly.
- Predict: Formulate predictions about where, when and how a behaviour can happen. A rebuke from a teacher could send this boy to the most turbulent cloud in his mind. Being able to predict what can stimulate these negative emotions would have helped him know how to control them.
- Change: This is where you contact a professional psychologist or detach yourself from external stimuli that contribute to putting you in these states. I believe seeking help would have changed the boy's life for the better.

👉 What leads to depression?
So many things lead to depression like negative events such as family issues, broken relationships, etc. But it is also important to know that hormonal imbalance can result in depression. For example, a drop in oestrogen (the hormone in ladies), progesterone, or testosterone can cause depression. Obesity, excessive exercise, chemotherapy and eating disorders like anorexia can lower the estrogen level of a person causing depression as well.
👉 How do we cope with anger and depression?
The person who bears the bout of this are the people around the victim. They are the ones who feel the effects of the transfer of aggression more. Coping with these psychological situations is never easy but first, take care of yourself. Do this by surrounding yourself with positive energies—good music, podcasts, etc. For the one struggling with any of these, it is not advisable to “cope”. Seek help ASAP. You deserve premium happiness and bliss.
👉 What are the Treatments for Anger and Depression?
Doctors usually recommend antidepressants and anger management training. Would not know how effective they are but I feel they are relevant given that they have existed almost forever.
