All five topics are quite interesting and content worthy but for this contest, it will be road.

The word road which was derived from the Old English word rád meaning “to ride” and the Middle English rode or rade meaning “a mounted journey” is now used to refer to all vehicular paths.

A road is a link, a path or an opening that connects different places. It is a linear or branched way which facilities and aids the movement of pedestrians and vehicles.

We have different types of roads which are classified based on a number of factors or features peculiar to that type. The most important classification is based on materials.

Classification Based on Materials

• Earthen roads: these are the cheapest type of roads which are made with the earth, that is, the soil. This road lasts longer with a good drainage system.

• Gravel roads: this is also a cheap type of road though better than the earthen road. It is gotten from a mixture of gravel and earth.

• Murrum roads: this road as the name implies is made from murrum which is a gravelly construction material gotten from rock disintegration.

• Kankar roads: kankar which is limestone in it's impure form is used in making road mostly in areas with good quantity of lime. This roads are low in performance and quality.

• Water Bound Macadam (WBM) roads: this roads contain an aggregate of crushed stones in the base course. Though they are very rough and may break into parts under traffic, they are of better maintenance in comparison to the above listed types.

• Bituminous roads: this road is made from a sticky, black and highly viscous liquid called bitumen. These roads are mostly used around the world due to their suitability for driving and low cost.

• Concrete roads: these roads are made from cement concrete. They are quite popular and costlier than all other road types. They also require very less maintenance and are suitable in high traffic areas.

Though the classification based on materials is the most important, we have other classification which could be based on location and function, on traffic volume, on economy, traffic type, rigidity or topography.
All these classes are also valid and they have the types of roads which fits into their description.

The main function of a road is transportation although they are other importance and functions attached to roads. These functions are;

• Roads support economic activity.
• They are very important in areas of tourism, trade and commerce.
• They can be used by can various types of vehicles.
• Almost all modes of transportation depends on roads to function properly and serve the masses.
• Good roads make traveling easier and faster.
• They increase the competitiveness of a country.

In conclusion, roads form a part of our daily life and are very important to us and the society at large.
