Your story raised an old question within me... why was Psyche not allowed to see Cupid's face? Was it because of the beginning of the transformation, or was it because of boredom?
In the end, it doesn't matter; gifts and jewelry are still bestowed on the women of the earth.

I assume Cupid is the empty shell, perhaps his face showed his ugly inner (lust, obsession, and so on) and he was more focused on his looks like the Greek God Narcissus? It would have been more logic if Cupid was not allowed to see Psyche's face.
I assume Psyche was the one who filled the empty shell and turned it into an egg.
Was it love or selfishness? Did Cupid miss her after she was punished (for sure he missed that bit extra, the creativity, the completeness of the inner with its flaws otherwise he wouldn't have saved her).
Cupid wasn't the God of love but his mother was. It is strange that Venus' day isn't celebrated or we don't say: In the name of Venus (instead of love).
Cupid (the Cupids there are more than one) stands for lust, desire, attraction and so one which can be part of love but if you think about it it's selfish and all about me, me and me, one way feelings with no eye for the one we want.
Perhaps it made Cupid more attractive if no one was allowed to look at his face or it was just a stupid rule based on nothing (I go for the empty shell shooting arrows blindfolded)
Presents? I have strong doubt about all those gifts and jewelry given on Valentine's Day. The biggest per cent of the women on earth receive nothing and never will. Most likely they are the ones if it comes to buying gifts and for sure men receive gifts as well plus are pampered.
As long as the myth (propaganda) about showing 'love' means showering with presents is alive people will believe it and try to join the party to show society they are true lovers.
But those gifts are not how love should be expressed, not in the first place.
