Pay attention to how you are feeling, and keep your compass heading set for JOY!
"Jack Canfield"
I was so happy to find a compass in a rolling box, I forced it out immediately and I began to navigate to different directions which I found my North, East, south and west. One of the most enjoyable thing we loved as science students was that, once we were able to see and experience what we were taught theoretically it brought out much more of the scientist in us.
At the end of the class, our Geography teacher announced that we will be having a new topic in the next class and he said it will be very interesting, he left us in suspense and we kept wondering what the next topic will be. This method our teacher devised was very effective as it kept us engaged and motivated to join the next class, you wouldn't even dream of missing it.

Most of us in the class loved to study atlas, which we loved to draw maps of countries and we were able to make a sketch of our country's map, Nigeria. "Map Work" he wrote, at that moment I saw the map unfold as Discoveries were ready to be explored. We noticed students from the next class coming in with earths globe 🌍, measurement tools, maps and a COMPASS, and we knew that definitely we were about to go on a great adventure. Before I would talk in details about the interesting lecture we had, I would love to make a clarification on what a Compass is for the non science students, hehe.

A compass is a tool used to get directions and navigations with reference to the earths magnetic field. I will have to be convinced that compasses also comes in other shapes, because I only see them in round shapes.
Components of a compass🧭
A compass is made of different components which are
A magnetic Needle: This needle which is mostly red in color turns to the magnetic North pole
pivot: This is an axis which pins the magnetic Needle to center and allows it to rotate freely.
Dail/face: This is the surface on the compass which is shows the marked symbols (N,E,W,S) and degrees.
Compass rose: These are those symbols showing the directions.
Types of Compasses
Magnetic compass: This is the most common type of compass used, it makes use of the magnetic field to navigate.
Electronic Compass: This uses GPS and sensors for its navigation.
Gyroscope: This uses a spinning gyroscope
Uses of compass
- used for navigation
- used for map reading
- used for surveying
Taking y'all back to the class, my classmates in front were already spinning the globe to check for their continent, "Africa", looks like I'm left out, I'm also African. The map gave us a good view of the drainage map of the continent, I saw countries like Egypt, then South Africa st the southern part of the continent and then Nigeria at the western part of the continent.
You are already confused by the whole southern and Northern thing, walk with me as I make them easy. Our teacher started with Cardinal points, he made us all stand, in front of us he said that's our North, our right hand side is our east, our left hand side is our west, then behind/back is our south. It is already very easy for us now, but the earths cardinal point is different from ours because we can face anywhere and start counting our points. Just know that the sun rises from the East and rests in the West, I picked my points from there and detect my Cardinal points.
Keeping the map of Africa in front of you, you would see the North up there, the east, the west which you can find Nigeria and the South which you csn find south Africa. Compass helps us to navigate these directions, pilots and sailors mostly use compasses, like big ships has many compasses which helps the sailor to navigate to the direction they want to go and also the Pilot, they have different compasses which guides them on where to follow.

Is it not amazing what the human mind can come up with?
I mean, a round little thing with a needle can actually show pilots where to fly the plane. Incredible!
Good luck with the contest!
Congratulations!
