I just love snails, while growing up as a little girl I used to see people around my neighbourhood going out at night to pick snails. Sometimes, it could be in a day time in the farm but that of the night was prevalent then.

As a little curious girl living with my grandmother, I asked grandma why people usually go out to pick the snails at night more than in the day. Grandma said it was because the snails only come out in the nights.
From there I realized that the 'snail' is a nocturnal animal like roaches and the rest.
But then before we begin, #What's a Snail?
To my understanding I used to think that snails are amphibians not until I researched.

"A snail is a small animal with a long, soft body, no legs and a spiral-shaped shell. Snail move very slowly.source"

"A snail is neither an insect nor an amphibian, but is instead a mollusk"Source

Health Benefits of Snails

I understand from my research and knowledge that snails contain protein but not like the red meat, it's low in fat and also contains low calories. Snails contains much nutritional benefits just like the 'mushrooms', which I wrote about two weeks ago.

Like I have much interest in mushrooms farming, I also have interest in snails farming too. I wanted to start its farming before I went for mushrooms training but I had some financial constraints at that time.
I'd even gotten the snails, kept them in a little space in my kitchen. But because I saw that they almost died, I had to eat them.
Moreover, why i stopped the farming was due to some environmental factors and security. For now about the snail farming, I have a replan towards it by next year, I just hope that everything workout well as I do desire.

How To Prepare Snails

  1. Wash and remove it from the shell
  2. Wash the snail skime away till it's no more slippery. I use lime juice or salt to wash it at home. I've heard of using alum
  3. Season it with salt, pepper, onion, garlic and any seasoning you wish to add. Leave it for 10-15mins.
  4. Boil or fry it. Personally, I love it fried with peppered sauce.
But if it's for soup, you'll have to boil for it for about 10-15mins alongside other proteins before you add it to the meal you're preparing.
There are diverse ways of preparing snail, this is based on ones taste and knowledge. I hope you'll consider preparing snail any time soon

Conclusion

Snail can be eaten by anyone. Children, adult and very good for the aged. Do you have any misconception as to eating snails? For me, I love it so much as it's very nutritional, a trial will convince you.

I've never had snails in a soup.
We have it with garlic butter and the French word for it is "Escargot"

Here in South Africa there is women who believe in using the slime of the snails for beauty treatment.
